Barclays dumps it's smart pay app and allows Google Pay now
Discussion
It would appear that Barclays is shutting down it's own pay app system and has at last allowed Google Pay to work for accounts, like every other bank already has for years.
For android smartphone and watch users (Google Pay/Wallet) currently with Barclays debit cards it seems.
Would be interesting to know the reason. Customer pressure, technology costs, lost customers...who knows.

With the switching service having been available for a few years, often with bonuses available for switching banks, I’d love to know why anyone who wanted to use Google Pay would have kept their account at Barclays. The space is so competitive, there’s no need to stick to any bank who can’t offer what you want.
Personally I am all for the latest tech, but paying by phone never seemed to be on my list. So I never noticed Barclays not using Google wallet. They sent me a mail the other day and I added my cards to the wallet (very easy). I have used it a few times, but really it is just easier to get a card out. It actually takes longer to pay by phone, I know its not a lot but. I am trying to leave my cards at home but after 45 years of not leaving home without checking I have my cards is proving the most difficult thing

Their advice for credit card users in future when they remove their own app is "Use your plastic card" ! So it doesn't seem that they are signing up to Google Play for credit cards just yet.
The message I received from them:"We'll be closing our Contactless Mobile payment service on 30 June. After that you won't be able to use it, but you can still use Goggle Pay instead, if you'd like to."
I've never used their app for paying with my debit card, only my credit card so doing that via Google Pay had better be possible.
I found this out a few weeks ago, I used to tweet them my disapproval once every few months that they were the only major bank not to support Google Wallet but do support Apple Pay. Their latest reply a few weeks ago was "we do" to my shock.
Got to admit I hardly use payments on my card but a few weeks ago I did leave the house without my wallet by accident and it was nice to have the ability to pay by phone.

When I now log into the Barclays app a message pings up reading,
"It looks like you need to reinstall the Barclays Mobile Banking app before continuing. You may also need to update your operating system to the latest version."
I'm using a Motorola phone bought in January 2021 running Android 11. It wasn't until early 2022 I read it wouldn't be getting Android 12, never mind Android 13.
Whatever, I just uninstalled the app, reinstalled it and tried to register using my Barclaycard as suggested and it dumped me out with a message, "You've successfully cancelled your registration." Now I have to phone them - some one give me a drink...
ETA: I can't use my Barclaycard with Google Pay contactless because, "...it isn't supported..."
