Another Humax. They have a refurb store which I have bought from

https://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/refurbished.html

Or look for a BT Youview box on eBay. (made by humax).

eg. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185860660647?epid=60372...

We bought a manhattan 4k box. It's great. But....

To be honest, freeview and the main 5 channels are so bad now (content with 1-5, and quality with the other 9999 channels) that its a waste of money.

I've just replaced our BT YouView box, (which was freezing every couple of hours) with a Humax FVP 5000T

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B076BQX7G7?ref=ppx_yo2...

and it's pretty good. Can record 3 programs whilst watching a 4th (that'll never happen). Only criticism is that the UI is a little slow, but the functionality is good, as is the picture quality.

Humax are absolutely crap. Had a couple and they always break.

I’ve bought the manhattan T3R. Much much better.

Am I understanding this correctly, does that only work with BT Internet, or would it work with Sky Internet or any other?

It will work for the OP as he wants to watch Freeview and to record it. I've just been looking to see if there's a way to also stream using non BT routers but not sure yet.

Many thanks, I was thinking maybe I'll get one, but think that one might be BT specific

You're after Freeview and be able to record it yes? So as far as I can tell it will work for you.

I bought a Humax HDR-1800T to replace a Youview box that I used and I can hand on heart say that the Humax is a waste of space, money and effort. It's just not worth the money. Just don't.

BT themselves are very vague as though it's a grey area but as far as I can tell you would definitely get Freeview channels and many others say rhey can stream stuff from non BT Broadband routers. Here's one of many forum threads I've read.............

This thread took me back to the Topfield TF5000PVRt days.
That was an amazing box in its day, with a great online community. Miss those days of fiddling.

There's never been a UI to match what you could do with a Topfield & it's a shame they never made an HD version. There are still people posting on the Toppy.org forums but most of the site has been archived.

Spent many an hour or three on there
I also had the first topfield sat box. Think there was only a lifestyle channel and BBC promo running at the time.
I spent ages transferring TV programs and films from the toppy to the PC, converting in to some bespoke codec to play on my Sony PSP for the London commute!

I've got a couple of BT Youview boxes here, the HD ones rather than the 4K ones, and they're pretty good. My most-used one was very quick when I bought it, but it's slowed down probably because it's usually down to 10% available space. Cheap though, one was a fiver on a car boot sale, the other was free. If I see another cheapo one I'll buy it for a spare.
