Accidental German
Discussion
I've just bought a laptop, it is an HP ENVY x360.
However, like a total cretin, I failed to notice I had ordered a German QUERTZ model, rather than a UK QWERTY.
Before I send it back, is there anything simple and straightforward I could do to change it?
I wondered if I could buy some sort of silicone cover for the keyboard (crumb barrier!) with a QWERTY on it, but that doesn't seem to be a thing. I looked at changing the keys, but they seem to be around £4 EACH with no real guarantee they will fit.
The only other thing I could think of was learning German...
A German keyboard has all the English letters but also the special German characters. The letters are just placed slightly differently.
When I worked in Switzerland all the keyboards I used were German. It didn’t take long to get used to the different layout. When I moved back to the U.K. I made mistakes at first but soon switched back to the U.K. keyboard layout. Your only problem will be switching between the two if you have to use a normal keyboard at work but we have the same problem as our Mac was bought in Switzerland.

Depending on the model of X360 a complete UK keyboard should be less than £40 delivered. Removal and replacement is reasonably simple.
If you pop up the full model number or serial number I can check.
That would be perfect. If you pop up the full model number or serial number I can check.
It's a HP ENVY x360 15-ew0753ng and the MPN is 6J9G8EA#ABD - is that enough info?
I picked up a used gun safe for a mate and took some phone pics to send to him.
For a laugh, I put the caption into smy schoolboy german, meaning to say,
'Here is your shooting cabinet.'
What I actually wrote was 'Hier ist dein scheissenkabinet.'
Anyone with a smattering of german will get this instantly.
Just two vowels reversed made my mistake do the rounds, it
practically went viral.

Looks like a proper faff. Last time I replaced a laptop KB I just popped the top facia off and undid a few screws... granted that was a 2005 era Dell. Replacement keyboard (if right model) - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325231920043
Before doing this, have you tried contacting the vendor to see if they'll do a swap for you, or if they'll send you a normal UK QWERTY KB you could swap out yourself? Worst thing they'll say is no and you'll be back at the above.
Is the OS the correct language?
Plenty of keyboard stickers on Amazon, worth a try for minimal outlay. Eg:

Similar to my error which was ask a German colleague if they were going to the Kristallnacht rather than the Christkindlesmarkt. I was multitasking at the time and don't speak much German. For a laugh, I put the caption into smy schoolboy german, meaning to say,

That might work if I can find some that work with the backlit keys.https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0725MXJ3T/ref=sspa_dk...
You can change the keyboard setting and languages from DE > EN. Yes the Z and Y will remain the wrong way around physically, but pressing Y will display Z and vice versa. If you can touch type, it’s not a problem. If it really is a bother, then Amazon QWERTY key board stickers. Viel Glück!
