What would be the fastest CPU I could upgrade my current system to please? Fancy an upgrade of the CPU but think I should be ok with everything else.

I currently have the following

B450M MORTAR MAX motherboard
AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core CPU
Radeon RX 5500 XT
32GB RAM

Cheers!

Looks like it supports 5000 series with a BIOS update so you have lots of options. What do you need use your PC for? You could get a 5950x but unless you need 16 cores might be a waste. 5600x is a great six core CPU. 5800X3D is the daddy for gaming.

Cheers - the main thing thats taxing my CPU at the moment is some music production software, which I don't think uses the GPU, hence me thinking about upgrading the CPU.

I agree with your choices.

Kudos to AMD for providing such a long lived platform in AM4. As someone who came to AMD having previously built an Intel setup that essentially had no realistic upgrade path, I definitely appreciate the flexibility that AM4 gave me.

I only went from 3700x to 5900x in my mobo which was decent but a mate went from a 2600x to a 5800X3D recently for an amazing boost all around.

Remember to update the BIOS before taking the old CPU out.

Are you currently using all the threads, or is it more a case of needing better single/ a few threads performance?

5900X is £300 on Amazon at the moment (12 cores 24 threads), 5800X just over £200 (8 cores 16 threads). Both will be a significant upgrade though if you are into gaming the 5800X3D (also £300 on Amazon) is the gaming price/performance king (8 core 16 threads but with a significant increase in cache size).

For non gaming a 5950x will be the fastest cpu. You will need to update the BIOS as the motherboard doesn’t support 5000 series cpu natively.

Still going for £450 so pretty steep price when the 12 core 5900X is £300

The op did say fastest cpu. Personally I’d go for a 5800x, as I wouldn’t of thought that a more powerful cpu would be beneficial for the op’s needs.
