I’m looking at buying one of those big iPads (12.9”) but don’t want to splash out big money as I’ll only be using it for sky go and similar.

Is a first gen 2016 one going to be still useful? I see it can run the latest iOS so I assume all apps will still work?

It’s only £175 so seems cheap given they’re well over £1200 for a new one.

Thanks all.

Cheers. From what I read it’s more the support for the latest iOS that screws things as the apps stop working

Mine's a late 2015 (ML2I2B/A) - I've had it from new and it still runs everything I need.

For that price, it seems a bargain, depending on how much longer iOS will be supported.

Cheers. It’s the same model as yours then. Agreed £165 so I think that’s a bargain. Although looking on eBay they don’t go for much more than that anyways.

They're currently listed by apple as Vintage but this year I believe that will move to obsolete.

Currently. It runs the latest iOS but for if it will make the cut in September who knows. Regarding apps some will run forever some the developers will stop updating for hardware reasons so can be hit and miss.

This is absolutely the key issue - there is nothing firm I can find anywhere that defines when it will move past Vintage.

After that, it's down to the apps that I actually use on it.

The chances of a 1st generation iPad Pro getting the new OS this September are very slim. However it will take some time (probably 1-2 years) until most existing apps require an OS one of these can’t run.

The first generation iPad Pro was introduced in 2015. Apple generally provide new OS releases for 5-6 years. It has an A9X CPU. No other A9 based devices got iOS 16 (the iPhone 6/6s, first generation SE all got dropped)

For around that price, you could buy a brand new 10" android tablet that will be able to run the latest firmware for years.

“Vintage products are Apple products that haven't been manufactured for more than 5 years, but less than 7 years. Obsolete products haven't been manufactured for more than 7 years.”

This mainly applies to Apple not supporting hardware repairs but it’s a useful indicator.

Cheers guys. Picked it up this morning and it seems great. Sky go and Amazon video working a treat.

For my purposes it’s perfect, for £165 it ticks a box. It even came with 2 cases (one a keyboard too which works surprisingly well).

Screen is extremely sharp, and had a screen protector on since new so it’s unmarked. It’s not laggy at all either which I feared. My only gripe is that the screen doesn’t seem to go as bright as I would think it should even thought it’s on the max brightness. Maybe that’s the screen protector.

Here’s hoping iOS updates continue as I know Sky Go normally insists on the latest version.

They’re great devices, I have mine with a keyboard case and never use it with the normal case. It’s also crazy to think about the going rate of a 7 year old iPad that originally sold around £700 you wouldn’t get that from many other devices!!

I was going to mention earlier things like banking or subscription based content are generally the ones that push for the latest iOS rather than the evil people at Apple that everyone would make you believe. But even if you get a year out of it you might then see the value in buying the latest model and getting 8 years from that (it’s about £150pa if you break it down).

The op was after a larger 12.9” device so defeats the object. But we had this on another thread recently where it was suggested android OS runs the latest software for years. A quick check and android devices sold 4 years ago no longer supported the current OS.

But.. but.. sheeple! Apple tax!

I have a Kindle Fire, which is about the level suggested for 'brand new about that price'. Its not as good as an iPad, not by a long way. My last iPad ran for 6 years and didn't need a reboot every couple of days to speed it up again. I only got rid as it wasn't supported any more and apps I use a lot, like Amazon and eBay, stopped working. The Kindle is still supported and gets updates, but the hardware is a long way short of Apple, and it's almost worthless secondhand. I got about £150 for my old iPad, despite it not being supported any more.

Unfortunately this is true, the Pixel 3/XL were released 4 years ago and are no longer supported. You can however flash newer versions of OS by getting a ROM from XDA Developers but usually this stops stuff like banking and SkyGo working.

There's no chance of a Samsung/Lenovo tablet getting 4 years of OS upgrades.

Hoping the new Pixel tablet that comes out will get decent support, if it runs ChromeOS then it should.

The android tablet comparison is unfortunately pointless as I’m well embedded into the apple world and absolutely nothing will change me sorry.

And yes. Having played with this for an hour now, I genuinely would rather have a 7 year old iPad than a brand new android tablet.

Made me think.

My iPad was bought in 2014 I think. Still going strong but I only use it for browsing and streaming.

I've not updated the OS in years as I always thought that old firmware running new software is where the problems start.

You'll run in to issues when apps start demanding that you update to version xxx but your version of the OS only supports the version before xxx.

Maybe. But then they've got the option of buying Generation -2 at second hand prices instead of brand shiny new premium prices. Rinse and repeat.
