Mods please move if this is not the right place.

This appeared the other day. Does anyone know what it is? Are we being showered with 5g covid rays or is it China listening in on the kids in the playground?

Potentially an air quality particulate sensor - doesn’t look like any of the 5G masts I’ve seen so far as they look way more substantial than that.

Either your house is going to get burgled or your dog is going to get bummed.

You're welcome, from Facebook.

First hit on google suggests, ENTIS: England’s National Traffic Information Service.

The National Traffic Information Service (NTIS) is operated on behalf of Highways England –the Highways Authority for the English strategic road network. NTIS provides information and data including raw and processed traffic data, messages relating to incidents and events, and variable message settings.

Information is provided across multiple dissemination channels, and is used for journey planning and informing journeys in progress. Information is provided to subscribers and partners continuously, and is also provided in a tailored form as strategic responses to events on the network. These responses have a measurable benefit to road users, mitigating the impact of events and improving journey time reliability.

Definitely not 5G, looks like some form of radio signalling equipment.

I suspect they will be along to install another sensor at some point that will then use that as a communication point.

Couple of years ago I saw a geezer in a high viz jacket up a ladder retrieving something from a similar device on a lamp post near my street.

Asked him what the device does and he said that he wasn't allowed to say.

Nice living in a democracy isn't it?

At least I wasn't arrested for asking.

Mine was:

ENTIS was founded in Milan in May 1990.

The general objective for ENTIS is to coordinate and collaborate the activities of the different Teratology Information Services (TIS), and to collect and evaluate data in order to contribute to the primary prevention of birth defects and developmental disorders.

Do we get to choose?

I think I have a preference.
Doesn't sound like its going to go well for the dog.

That all depends on the dog's preferences.

I don't think an employee of a private company declining to disclose information to a passer by has anything to do with democracy. Unless I'm missing something?

If was working on my laptop in public and you asked me what I was doing, I would likely tell you it was confidential. Not because I'm being a dick, just because I am obliged by my employer to ensure the privacy of my work.

He worked for the Highways Agency according to his van.

There are loads of devices attached to lamp posts that interact with cars and people using the roads and streets.

We should know precisely what all of them do.

That information is probably publically available, but equally probably not.

I expect he did know what it did, he just didn't want to tell you, as is his democratic right.

The lantern on top of the column has a CMS node therefore there is a 24hr supply available in the base. Its a UHF/VHF antenna that's strapped to the pole, and my guess is that its a repeater base station bouncing a signal on between devices and it's taking a feed from the column. It could be for a whole load of purposes.
