Hi All

I've always been interested in the technical side of making music. I used to love the fact that my Atari ST had MIDI and I could connect my Yamaha up and .... well just mess around really.

Fast forward 30 years and I've still not really scratched that itch. My 9-year-old son has a Roland GO:Keys which seems pretty capable and has MIDI capability over USB, and we have a Macbook M1 Air.

So, to be able to play something on the Roland and record it on to the Mac and add different tracks etc, what software do I need? Something simple ideally, I'm not looking to break in to the charts here.

Thanks in advance

As you have a Mac, all you need to get started is GarageBand which is pre-loaded.

Connect your MIDI controller and away you go.

If you want to input voice, or non midi sounds or get some decent speakers at some stage you will also need an audio interface such as Focusrite Scarlett or similar.

Just downloading GarageBand again now as I'd removed it!

The laptop is connected to some Harman Kardon Soundsticks which are good enough for now. I've also got a Snowmall microphone somewhere if we wanted to add some voice, although that's very unlikely!

This is all the advice you need!

Funnily enough I have had the same notion for the last few months, having had the Atari running Cubase in my youth controlling a host of kit, much of which is still in my parents attic.

I never transitioned to windows based sequencers (was too complicated!) and put it all into storage around then. Maybe Garageband is a way back in.

Once I finish converting my cellar to a man cave I’ll get all my kit back and give it a go smile
