Now 75 and have only ever had a normal mobile, but am now forced to buy a "smart" phone to connect to the car. Bought a Gigaset G7 which doesn't work with the car (connects but hacks the signal, so unusable, phone chip too slow)
Can anyone recommend me a cheap smartphone which is VERY easy to use (never ever used an apple, just a normal MS computer)
I don't need whatsap or facebook or any of those things, texting, phoning, photos(?) and perhaps geolocation for when I'm hiking in the backwoods
I'm finding Androids new for around €125 and renewed iPhone from €250.... Not willing to pay more due to relatively little phone usage! Needed to use internationally including in North America and all EU (live in Germany)
Grateful for any realisable and reasonable solutions... thanks guys.

Best way to describe i think is that iPhones are more consistent. They all work the same way and barely ever change through years of software updates.

‘Android’ covers a broad range of phones that all work differently, and with some manufacturers major updates can basically completely change the phone.

My dad couldn’t get on with the Android phone I gave him but every person and every droid phone is different…

Why does it need to be smart to connect to the car??

Is it for android auto or CarPlay? As if it’s only for Bluetooth then any feature phone will also do the job for a fraction of the cost.

Suspect the car has a "connected" app.

If Android I'd recommend looking for either a Pixel phone that will have a few years updates or an "Android One" supported phone that will get updates as well, but at that price point your looking at Pixel phones that are already out of support.

Not sure what iPhone you can get for that price but check how much support it has left.

or else next minute the app will want to update and it will say its not supported.

Some kind of xiaomi will fit the bill.

Android are mostly the same, just with a few interface tweaks by some manufacturers. Some are more heavy handed than others. Xiaomi are very hands off in this regard, and also good, and cheap.

Switching between android manufacturers really only takes an hour or less to get used to the changes. It's usually a relocation of the apps drawer , or the home and back buttons being changed to gestures.

iPhones benefit from every phone model being the same. Ask a question and the internet will have a precise answer. You just have to pay twice as much for the privilege.

My wife and I are 71. I have been using computers regularly since 1978 and will be gutted when I have to replace my Moto G6 dual SIM Android phone.

My wife is not technically minded. She has had two Android phones, but could never get to grips with either of them. We bought her a pre-owned iPhone 7 and she uses it really well. Its a communication device with hardly any non-standard apps, apart from WhatsApp.

I honestly cannot see where its advantage lies, but for her its chalk and cheese.

Firstly thanks guys... all....

I only need to connect with the car for calls (i.e. hands free).... have bought feature phone (Gigaset G7) with same Bluetooth generation 4.2 as the car but it connects but as car processor is fast and the phone slow it hacks the signal up badly so unusable...
Subaru dealer tested with many smartphones and all work, all mine don't... so my hands are tied....
BTW it's the latest Subaru Outback if that helps.... can connect to WIFI etc....

Never heard of this as a thing it should connect or it shouldn’t. As others have said though iPhone would be my suggestion there are so many variables of android phones that make it more complex. iPhone the only option really is what fits your budget.

Buy a second hand android from somewhere like Game.

Save a fortune and get almost leading edge for a lot cheaper. And they give a guarantee too.

I got a Samsung s20 for about £200.

Does everything, and more, that I need

That's what I'd do. My wife and I are on S21's these days but my son is still on an S10 and that's still a great phone.

I'd avoid Apple. Too expensive and if you're not paying attention you end up with lots of your data locked up in their really annoying ecosystem.

I've found non mainstream brand phones (dogee, cat) can have a lot of quirks.

OP a lot of people say apple but if you're not an apple person some of the way they make you do things can actually be very frustrating - the Mrs switched us from spotify to apple music recently and the "well apple do it this way only so you can do it this way only or do one" ecosystem is far from what people say.

But TBF what do the people around you, the ones you might ask for help with anything, have? Make it the same as them!

Read the OP. He literally needs the most simple phone to operate and that connects to the car. Both OS’s offer that but for support and simplicity the iPhone will always win, price not so much.

Until apple decide. It to support it anymore.

Apple is no simpler to use than android, its laughable that people say it is, its just different.

Thats no different with any manufacturer. I don’t think it’s unrealistic to not provide updated OS to something after 6 years and call it obsolete when its not been sold for over 7, they will still work, just not get iOS updates i believe they still receive security updates.

Oh hold up the pixel 3 isn’t able to be upgraded to the current version of android, a phone released 3 years ago!!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_3a

Laughable argument you presented there!

For good results with Android Auto, I think that Android OS11 or later works best.

I struggled with my Moto G6 but got it working normally, eventually. But newer phones and my wife's iPhone 7 all connected immediately.

I did thank you, read the last sentence of my reply. An applephone may not be ideal if everyone in his circle has android and vice versa.

My 5-year old Honor 9 Lite is running Android 9 & immediately connected to both mine & my wife's cars using Bluetooth & USB cable.

Well the pixel 3 was released October 2018, so hardly 3 years ago, and my wife has a Samsung s6, still works perfectly and was released in 2015.
But don't let the facts get in the way of your apple fan boy behaviour.

Laughable argument you presented there.

Apologies 3a, as per the link I posted some 3 years.

The fan boy behaviour was started by yourself suggesting they work until Apple say so. The reality is that Apple support older devices with modern OS vs android.
