After trying to put this off for a while, I have been booked in for this weekend which annoyingly conflicts with the 6 Nations on the telly.

Can anyone who has had this done advise on the process inside the property?

My (older) VM router is in a bedroom/home office, the phone master socket in the hall, and another cable goes to the sitting room for the VM TV box.

The router is "carefully" positioned tucked into a corner behind my workstation so access is not great and I really, really don't want to have to move it - it is plugged into a mesh set up there and then on to a small network switch which feeds a Philips Hue box and a powerline adaptor.

Is it simply a case of the new VM Hub being a straight plug and play swap (I will reconfigure it to modem mode myself once set up), so the VM bod won't have to fanny about replacing/shortening cables etc?

I understand the phone now plugs into the back of the new router, and I guess I just move my existing phone base unit from the hall to the bedroom/study where the VM router is?

Do they then just disconnect the phone master socket? It is a flat, so I wondering why they can't just do that outside somewhere or in the common areas where the cabling comes in.

Will they be mucking about with the TV box at all?

For various reasons (watching Scotland snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against Wales, work to get done etc) I really want them in and out asap.

I would be grateful for any experiences/thoughts on the changeover.

I just had the router delivered and relocated the phone. New router has Wi-Fi that actually works properly so I decommissioned a couple of APs and ISTR a 2.5 Gb wired network connection. Very low hassle.

Thanks, so there is not really any need for anyone from Virgin to turn up to do anything unless you are a technophobe?

If I could just grab the router from him at the door and tell him/her I will sort it that would be ideal smile

It's very straightforward. Hardest part is using the plastic spanner they provide to move the external connection from the old router to the new. Think it will depend on the the engineer as to if they are comfortable leaving you to do it.

Had the email from Virgin a few days ago saying the following.....

On 03 May your current home phone service will stop working and be switched over to our fibre network. We will send you an adapter in the post which you’ll need to use to connect your home phone to your WiFi Hub so you can make and receive phone calls over our fibre network.
What you need to do
Keep an eye out for the adapter. It'll come with simple step-by-step instructions to help you get it set up. You’ll need to do this on or after 03 May.
Do you have any connected devices?
In the unlikely event there’s a power cut or a fibre network disruption, you won’t be able to make or receive calls and most connected devices (such as a burglar alarm linked to a control centre, a telecare device, or other phones connected to extension sockets) will be affected.
You’ll also need to contact your device provider and let them know about the switch to make sure they’re compatible with a fibre service.

As I have no landline plugged in anyway the adapter will just sit in a drawer smile

Im a Virgin tech, if your happy to relocate your main phone, then it will be simple.

If you have a hub 2, they will need to swap your hub for a 3, once done, they will then need to request the change to 21cv, once thats gone through, the TDM lines will automatically switch off, they will then plug the dongle in and plug your phone in and done.

If you have a hub 3, all they will need to do is request the 21cv, plug the dongle in, do a test call, and away they go.

Will only be difficult if you want them to connect up existing sockets.

The engineer will need to come in and make sure its all sorted.

I didn't think the hub 3 had a socket for a dongle? That's how I got a hub 5 upgrade.

My router (hub) is quite old and I suspect a 2. I'm not bothered about getting additional phone sockets connected. Happy enough for my main phone base unit to be plugged into the router.

Are we looking at a 15 minute job tops then?

Probably about half an hour, by the time the hub has been swapped, and then the request for the changeover to go through.

Ended up taking about 30 minutes in the end biggrin although the chap said the automatic activation he would normally do on his phone wasn't working so a manual one needed to be done that took longer.

Straightforward, and never touched the phone master socket - just plugged in new router plus phone and did stuff on his phone to configure plus a lot of waiting for the router to sort itself out.

It is plugged into a mesh set up anyway, so can't comment on the performance of the router wi-fi signal. I don't know if the Hub 3 is meant to be any better than the 2 in terms of speed, but not noticed much of a difference so far - my package is not a particularly fast one anyway (40-50 up and 9-10 down) which is fine for my WFH use most of the time.

I just need to get a better deal now on the extortionate price I am paying them at the moment..................

9-10 down seems very slow, the minimum we do is 50, but its more than likely your on 125mbps so you should be getting more than that, might be worth testing it direst from the router over wifi and wired, if there is an issue, I would get someone to look at it.
