Non play store android apps

I asked this in the IP camera thread but thought I'd repost as it might not be seen.

Are these sites safe to use for Android apps that are no longer on the Play store?

I've not used those sites in a while but I used to regularly sideload apks. Everytime though it would be from sites that I knew. Places like APKMirror where I could check the MD5. Never had a problem with any of them.

Last time I did this was a year ago to get an older version of Spotify that played nice with my car.

Just be careful what permissions it asks for, and what you grant.

Without any additional permissions I don't think a manually-installed APK install can do too much damage. Or is that naive?

Completely understand that it's a risk - was wondering if others were using these sites and if there were more reputable ones I guess.
