Hi all. I’m being really lazy but trying to sort this but I have a digital piano which can play midi files from a usb stick.

But rather than having to unplug from my piano and plug into my MacBook and then back into the piano once transferred I wondered if such a device existed so I could transfer these files across to the usb via wifi or Bluetooth? Even hard wired usb to usb? I don’t know.

Totally lazy like I say but would really save me seconds lol

I can't think of anything that could achieve that

Does the piano also support a full-size SD card? If so, then you can get Wifi enabled SD cards which you can upload the data over Wifi, and the equipment can use it.

I use one on my 3D printer so I don't need to get up to start printing smile

They're meant to be used in cameras so you can download the pictures without opening it.

No but I think there are usb to sd card adaptors. Would one of those with your gadget be possible?

Why not just plug the piano into the PC and play the midifiles from windows?

Actually on second thought that’s a terrible idea as now you need the PC on to jam along

Can’t think of anyway to achieve this that doesn’t involve a raspberry pi and thus complexity - it’s something similar to what we do for connecting up old samplers

It probably can do something like this. But is well above my knowledge tank. Here’s a pic of the underneath of the piano slots (minus the usb as that’s at the other side stand alone). Although the display on the piano only seems to show a ‘usb drive’ on the menu.

Okay, so that is a USB-B connector, which is for plugging into a computer instead of the MIDI interface, and it is unlikely to support a USB flash drive from that connector.

In which case, using a computer to play it should be trivial.

Sorry I did say but the usb slot is on the other side stand alone. Here’s the pic of that.

Yes it seems it does and there’s far cheaper ones on eBay with less storage (I only need a tiny amount as midi files are small).

Thanks all. Seems we’ve gone from nothing available to a perfect solution in an hour!! The power of PH!

Good stuff!

Avoid the angst of connecting your piano to the computer, it’s only for advanced stuff that will frustrate you for now - just enjoy what you are doing for now

Well it turns out my excitement was short lived as I’ve just read that these sandisk connects are not able to be written to remotely from a laptop (only read). So back to square one. Maybe such a thing doesn’t exist after all.

Might be possible with the thing that I have and an SD card reader...

(Which is a Toshiba Flashair).

I just looked to see if you could make your computer emulate being a USB drive, so you could just attach a USB cable between piano and computer, but it looks like you can’t due to how the USB controller in the computer works

Looks like you are stuck with the unbearable pain of plugging in a USB stick ;-)

You can always make it easier by buying a usb extension cable if your PC’s usb port is awkward?

Thanks I've tried that in the past and I wouldn't call it simple!

Besides, as I put above, the piano only recognises midi files from a USB stick so I don't think that would work anyway.

Nice bit of kit! I have err ... a "few" bits of Roland kit here, none of which make Piano noises biggrin

You're out of luck, you'll just have to get used to shifting the USB stick about. It's possible to cobble together something to emulate the CD rom drive that can attach to it, but in terms of cost, hassle and skill required, you're much better off just living with the hassle of having to copy the midi files onto the USB stick.

Never mind. I like that it has the display. Looking to buy an electric piano for the kids (I hate real pianos) and that looks like an excellent choice for learning

Garage band, or any other software that plays back Midi files on the computer will work quite easily - all you need is a USB->Midi cable to plug into your piano (20 quid, software is free), but now you have more cables running about and have added complexity. The midi file just tells the piano engine what notes to play - either that comes off the file on the USB, or it's bits sent across a Midi cable, there is no difference except the Midi cable part and then needing a computer
