Clearing out my home office and have 4 old laptops to dispose of. None will power up - very old. The three windows laptops I have just opened and taken out the hard drives to smash up.

I can't open the mac so I'll just hammer a spike through it in a few places.

Plan to give it a good general demolition but does anyone know where the hard drive sits?

Thanks

You can take the back off the MAC and remove the drive, unless it's a soldered SSD. Does the MAC charge and switch on? It's a shame to scrap it. What is the model number? It will be printed on the back.

That's a Macbook from around 2009 onwards, the unibody they were referred to as. You just need a precision screwdriver to remove all the silver screws on the back (bottom) of the laptop and you will be able to remove the hard drive quite easily. I upgraded the RAM and SSD on a few of these. If you Google "ifixit unibody Macbook ssd upgrade" you'll find instructions on how to proceed.

Agreed, shame to just destroy the whole thing when it could still be of use to someone else even as spares.

I wouldn't destroy the MacBook. Just before Christmas I rescued a 2012 Unibody MacBook Pro from being thrown out by a friend of mine who no lnger wanted it. I put an SSD in it and 16Gb RAM and installed MacOS Ventura on it via Open Core Legacy Patcher and it's still a very capable machine.
