I use apple products. Phone, iPad and two laptops.
I guess I have been using Apple private relay for a while without noticing it until I looked at vpns and cloudflare.
I have switched to 1.1.1.1 for dns and installed the warp app. This I see as a privacy and a speed benefit.
Should I have both on, switch one off or look at other options including a vpn?
I may be experiencing sync issues with iCloud but that may be my imagination

Opinions, recommendations and any advice greatly appreciated

What problem are you trying to solve?

Using 1.1.1.1 for DNS lookups may be faster than using your ISP's DNS service, but maybe not. In theory it means that your ISP isn't logging your DNS requests, but they're probably not encrypted and so could be tracked if they were so inclined. Either way, they know what IPs you request...

If Warp is a VPN then that should hide more from your ISP but it just moves visibility onto the VPN provider..

As above, it depends what problem you're trying to solve. 1.1.1.1 may speed up DNS requests a bit, Warp may be useful in hiding your location from web services but none of this really helps privacy.

I had wanted to speed up my browsing more than anything. I have Gigaclear and the speed and wait is quite often slower than I think it should be. With 1.1.1.1 it does seem snappier.
When out and about, I thought using the Cloudflare app ( warp ) would speed me up and make me more secure.
The Apple private relay seems to run in the background and I have never doubted apple

Apple private relay will not speed up your connection, it is more likely to slow it down.

"When Private Relay is enabled, your requests are sent through two separate, secure internet relays."

You are adding in more hops for your traffic and that can only slow it down and only the first relay is operated by Apple.

It is also off by default so you will not have been using it without realising, you would have had to turn it on (it's under iCloud in settings).

I would use either warp or apple private relay and not both. Personally i prefer apple relay as it is all built in with no extra app needed.

There is very little difference between the big DNS providers as far as latency goes in the UK as most have data centres in London and you’ll find lookup performance similar if you do some dig commands from the mac.

The bigger differences are usually related to what they have in their front end cache for public users, ie, are you looking at and looking up common sites that lots of other people are on their service.
