I would like to get a PC that will run Windows 95.
I have an autistic son who likes to play some old PC games (and VHS videos but don't ask...), but some of them are Win 95 and will not play on modern machines. I have a couple of XP PCs that will run some of his games but they won't run the following:

Daytona USA Deluxe - "Pentium Win 95"
Need for Speed Road Challenge. Win 95 -98
Human Body Explorer - Win 95, 98.
London Racer - Win 98, 2000.

You can see a sort of PH connection, and he is learning to drive in a 1989 Austin Metro VDP Auto so deserves some PH assistance?

I would also like to get a back up VHS player in case our last working one, Panasonic combi VHS/CD, packs up.

Pic of his Metro for added PH ness.

Thanks.

In XP, you might be able to look at the properties of the icon to launch the game and set it into compatibility mode?

Otherwise get some 95/98 floppies and install it into a VM. Oracle VIrtualbox is free to use.

No idea how compatible it is but compatibility mode still exists in Windows 10:

Alternatively as you say, run it in a VM. Install media can be downloaded from WinWorld: https://winworldpc.com/library/operating-systems

There's plenty of guides online to get it running in VirtualBox.

With the VHS videos would he be ok if they were digitised or is it the VHS he likes?

Run the XP in a Virtual Environment.

You can download virtualbox free and XP free also.

Stick on a modern PC and run the virtual XP fullscreen.

It's runs exactly the same and behind the scenes you can then snapshot it, so if and when he's messes it all up, you simply reload the perfect version.

Very simple and easy to do!!

The tools to run NFS:Road Challenge (NFS 4) on modern OSs are available online.

I have it running on Windows 10, natively other than using NGlide to emulate Glide instead of trying to use D3D. You certainly don’t need an old PC to do it.

It’s not too difficult to to, and well worth it. I still love that game.

VirtualBox and the ISO from here https://winworldpc.com/product/windows-95/osr-2 would work well.

Otherwise your into learning about retro hardware and trying to cobble an age appropriate w95 pc together which although fun is a bit of mission creep...

I'd be looking at installing Windows 98 on one of those XP machines, if they're old enough to have driver support of course.

I assume Daytona USA Deluxe will work in Windows 98.

However here's some rather old instructions on making it work in XP

Anything that runs on 95 should run on 98SE, although it's not a 100% guarantee. But they're the same kernel, unlike modern Windows, which is the NT line. XP was the first "home" edition to use the NT kernel.

Easiest thing is to get a copy of 98SE and test it in a virtual machine.

As for hardware, I successfully got Windows 3.11!! to run on an i9-9900k machine, natively. For some reason Windows 98 didn't work, but I've managed it on a Core i5 laptop before.

In terms of PCs to run it on, given the gaming dimension, it's all about the graphics drivers. I believe you can find drivers for a Geforce 6800 Ultra or Radeon 9800 XT.

Your son might enjoy looking for a suitable PC on the web - you want something with classic PCI slots, and going above at most 1GB of RAM introduces all sorts of problems (256 MB is more than plenty, 512 should be fine). Not insurmountable, but you have to edit config files (my laptop had 8GB, I told 98 to use 256 MB). Windows 3.11 managed a full gigabyte.

An early noughties PC would probably be easier to find, as long as it has classic PCI slots, it should be totally fine.

Tidy Metro you have there, a Vanden Plas no less! I loved my old MG.

It surprised me how few Pentium II era PCs there are on ebay. I suppose most of them were taken to the tip a long time ago as there was a time when they were worth next to nothing. They are also quite big and heavy to store in the loft.

Like others have said, you have lots of options. Most Windows 95 games would also run on DOS, so maybe DOSBox.

Some of those games will have been released on consoles. You could run them on a modern PC using an emulator, or start a vintage console collection...

Impressive stuff! I do like a bit of retro tech.
My autistic son is addicted to using Windows Movie Maker, which keeps one laptop on Windows 8.1, so I appreciate where you're coming from.

Oh no, it has to be the VHS!
We have tried the "but you can still watch it on a DVD..." That won't do at all!

It's a strange condition. He is now 24 but can act like a 4 year old at one time and a 40 year old at other times. His practical driving is very good - obeys all rules as they are "rules" but I can't get him to sit the Theory Test as he does not understand the scenarios section but will score around 35/50 regularly on the training PC disc. Hey ho. With his almost photographic memory, hopefully he will eventually remember all the answers...

Thanks for the replies. I'll see if I can progress some of the suggestions. Metro MOT tomorrow. All 29k miles!

Dosbox-X is another option to run Windows 95.
