I need a 4G data card to run the Hive/Nest system I want to install at my father-in-law’s house in Ireland. I only need a small data allowance but I can’t seem to find a card that lets me buy, say, 10GB of data and keep using it until it’s used up regardless of how long it takes. Everything requires a monthly subscription which is more £s and GBs than I need. Does anyone know of a SIM card that’s a one-off payment and doesn’t expire?

Google O2 classic PAYG.
You do need to do something in a 6 month period, but when I was looking, this was more or less the only option

The regular GiffGaff goodybags don't expire (but you do need to use them occasionally to keep them active. They're at the bottom of this page.

Is this for Northern Ireland or the Republic? As I suspect some will have additional costs for the Republic.

Republic of Ireland. It is tricky. That Vodafone deal doesn’t seem to be available to new customers.

There are NO roaming charges for the RoI. On any network.

Eta: on any UK network.

But there are roaming data limits. It probably won’t exceed them on a smart heating system.

Also a quick look at three suggests their fair usage policy is specifically for UK customers visiting countries which this is not so the OP runs the risk of the line being cut after 6 months of usage overseas?

A quick glance at EE suggests when you hit 50gb overseas you will get charged additional fees unless you return to the UK.

The simple solution here would be for the OP to get an Irish data sim.

Thanks everyone. I’ll take a look. FWIW Ireland has a poor selection of sims hence my original question. Cheers.

They keep bouncing between £34 and £40
You can only get them on amazon, 3 shops refuse to acknowledge they exist.
