Might seem obvious but I think I’m missing something, my wife has an iPhone 13 which is 5g capable and it is turned on in settings. She’s on EE.

We have been in 5g coverage areas many times but I’m yet to see the little data indicator on her phone change from 4g to 5g……is it supposed to or is she just not actually getting 5g even though EE says she’s in a coverage area?

Yes, will say 5G instead of 4G.

Check you don't have the saver set so it won't swap from 4G to 5G unless necessary. Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Data Mode >

My Pixel 6 Pro on EE shows 5G when connected. However, it hammers the battery when you're on the edge of a 4G/5G coverage area as it continually jumps between them. I don't see the benefit of 5G anyway so have disabled it on the phone. Battery lasts much longer and 4G is plenty good enough where I am - 120Mbit down and 45 up. Why would I ever need faster on a phone...?

If you didn't already know, you need a 5G SIM.

Cheer’s guys, sounds like 5g is more trouble than it’s worth….I’m just on an iPhone 11, no rush to upgrade yet then.

You sure about that? I get 5G on my S21 Ultra and got a pretty old SIM card.

If she is connected to a WiFi network at the time then switch off WiFi & then the 5G symbol should then light up when in a 5G signal area.

To add a little context to this. EE, Vodafone and 3 all provide SIMs that will connect to 5g. O2 have only been supplying SIMs able to connect to 5g since 2019 so there are a few people using O2 who would need a new SIM.

Funny thing is I have an iPhone 13 with 5G, O2.

Never ever in the last 10 months seen 5G in the uk. But every time we visit Spain or the canneries I get 5G as soon as I take the phone of flight mode.

My wife’s is exactly the same.

Odd.

If I hadn't upgraded my contract with Virgin in 2018 I would still be using a SIM card that could not receive 4g, let alone 5g. They had to send a replacement card so I could access the faster speeds available on my new contract.

Huh, I never knew that, good info. I'm on O2 and can't remember if I personally needed one but there have definitely been a few upgrades over the years.

I do get the 5g logo on my iphone
As above, I wouldn’t bother TBH if you’re happy with your 4G
4G is great here. 5G can be faster on speedtest, but is slower to use in real life!

Some EE 4g/5g contracts have a download limit of 100 mbs. You have to pay more for 'full' speed.

I also wasn’t getting 5G to begin with on a new phone when I should have been.

Contacted the network (Talkmobile/Vodafone) and they asked me to follow this procedure (on an Android device, but would be similar on iPhone) - tantamount to turning off the network connection and turning it back on again.

Select Settings
Select Connections
Select Mobile networks
Turn Data roaming on or off
select Network operators
Turn off Select automatically
Select OK
Wait for the search to finish
Select your network (Talkmobile for me)
Then restart your device

It worked after that, though I’ve since had to do this more than once when I’ve noticed I’m not getting 5G in a 5G area - could just be my phone?

You can also turn automatic network selection back on afterwards and it continues to work.
