Please note that this is not a swap, but a request for something that will be easy to use by my Mum

What does she want to do with it - just make calls or run Whatsapp etc? Amazon have a number of big button phones:

We went from a doro to a stripped back iPhone with very few apps and huge font size which works equally well. We ensure periodically that updates are downloaded and it’s on a £10 a month sim in our names. I think it has wattsap, phone, bbc news and the lotto app. Anything Apple won’t let us delete is hidden in a folder.

Unless she/you want the internet on her phone for the likes of WhatsApp there's a lot to be said for a clamshell phone that answers when opened and ends when closed. Depending on her dexterity it's easer than finding small buttons or swiping on screen. That's been my experience with our 'oldies'. 1P Mobile (EE network) has worked well for us costing only £30 PA with their usage (mostly incoming calls).

It will only be used to make calls, no wattsapping required

Doro 2404 from Asda? Think thats the clam shell one with good sized buttons.

Avoid cheap Nokias- very poor now -tiny buttons , small text etc

I've gone for a 4g Easyphone

It's a little more expensive than the 2g variant, but decided it was worth it for the futureproofing, even though it's likely that the 2g network will be left running for ages.

I've one that you can have to try her, you'll just need a sim.

Usefull programmable SOS button, our elderly relative wouldn't take it with her or turn it on unless an emergency in case she ran the battery flat. url]|https://thumbsnap.com/sun2MJ2L[/url]

My wife has the one above. It sits in a charge cradle so it is always ready and she doesn't have to worry about charging.
It's got big buttons so it helps with her arthritic hands.

I've now got a phone, unlocked to any network, but it seems that PAYG voice sims need topping up every thirty days. Any alternatives, preferably ones that could be obtained before Christmas.

Tesco Mobile PAYG - you can pick up a SIM & top up at the supermarket checkout. The credit doesn't run out & I go months bethween having to top it up.

We got my Dad (age 89, good with engines, crap with IT technology) a Doro 6040 mobile phone.
Its a flip phone with nice big buttons similar to his house phone so he's comfortable with it. The phone does some basic technology but you can customise it so to only show what is wanted - which is phone book and text for my Dad.
It would have been an utter waste of time getting him a smartphone, even the supposed simplified ones would make his head explode.
A well meaning relative changed the in-laws old style mobile for an Apple, they hated it and when they saw the Doro they thought it wonderful smile

I've ended up with an Easyphone with a Tesco PAYG SIM

We'll get an idea tomorrow how useable it really is.
