Evening.

I am toying with the idea of upgrading to FTTP as it's only a few quid extra per month. I have my own router and Wi-Fi setup (unifi) that I want to continue to use.

Will the supplied BT hub allow me to use it as a modem only? And if not, does any one use a third party modem with BT FTTP, and if so, which one?

Thanks.

Will you be using digital voice or just broadband? Any PPPoE router can be used if you don't need digital voice, if you need need digital voice aka have a BT landline then you have to use the SmartHub.
You can turn wifi off and with some fiddling get another device to advertise DHCP services. You can't put the hub is modem only mode.

Do you have an existing smarthub if so check it has a "WAN" port on the back or a sticker over the fourth Ethernet socket. Yes any smarthub2 can be firmware upgraded to support WAN/FTTP but it needs to be connected for a period before the BT servers will push out the firmware update.

If you google ‘fttp bt unifi’ you find a number of guides on how to do this.

As already said as long as your unifi routing device will do PPPoE over the wan port (& off hand I can’t think of any that don’t) then you simply connect the routing device wan port to the ont.

If you need to keep the telephone number you’ll want to move that off to a alternative voip provider first.

Thanks for the replies.

So in that case am I right in thinking that a FTTP installation has a fibre modem, and also the BT hub? If so then that's fine, I use PPPoe currently (on the USG3) with a normal adsl openreach modem.

Yes the openreach install presents an Ethernet port off the ONT.

Perfect. That should work perfectly then, providing the installer agrees to my preferred awkward instal location.

Thanks all.

You don't need to use the BT supplied kit at all if you don't want digital voice. My mesh goes straight into the socket

BT send their routers out by RM Tracked 48 delivery, so be wary of using them at the moment unless the engineer has one on his van. Mine is still sat at Bristol mail centre two weeks after the engineer attended. Luckily my old router will do for now, but worth considering if using BT.

Excellent. Thanks.

No need for phone/voip so all good there.

That's no bother. The earliest slot for installation was the 13th January.

Before you sign up, don't forget it will be going up something like CPI + 3.9 in March, which will be around 13/15%, might be worth waiting to see if you can get a better deal after that date, as those on contracts can't avoid it.

They also despatch them 2 or 3 days prior to the booked install date. So even if RM aren’t standing around a brazier delivery is very touch and go. The “fibre conversion kit” aka Ethernet lead in a bag for my old smarthub2 turned up a week post install. Thankfully I had my own.
