My son has a Toshiba TV around 42", which is a few years old, and for the last few months the picture has had a single thin red line across the picture about two thirds down.

Now it seems to have gone kaput, there is sound, but no picture.

Worth repairing? Anyone have any idea what it is likely to be?

Thanks in anticipation.

WR,

Vestel manufacturer tvs in Turkey and they are rebranded to known names.
They're about as cheap as tvs can be and therefore unlikely to be cost effective to repair

Screens knackered.

Buy a new TV. Should be some good deals about just now with the World cup/christmas sale.

It's rubber ducked - time for new TV. Richer Sounds is the place to go.

As I suspected, I think if there was an easy fifty quid fix it would be worthwhile.

TV's are ridiculously cheap compared to the early seventies,

A typical 21" CRT colour set was around £150 when the average wage was around £40pw. (Extra for remote control)

I inherited a 55in Sony Bravia that won’t switch on when I moved into my house in September. I have tried three different places to repair it but nobody seems interested. It seems the days of the TV repair man in the white coat who solders in a couple of replacement transistors for a tenner are gone! I think I will just have to dump it

More than likely the power supply board needs replacing which is an easy fix and doable for around fifty quid................

its the same for most gadgets

dishwasher failed after just 2 years, diagnosis suggested it was the combi heater water pump a known failure point, repairer wanted £90 call out, £50 per 30 mins after the first 30 mins, £160 for the part if that was the problem, then another call out and time to change it, circa £500 in total

i just bought a new one for £190 ...

Thanks dickymint. The LED flashes 6 times and there are a lot of articles about resetting the TV but none of them have worked. I just need to find someone who is interested in fixing it!

I assume a TV repairman has gone the way of other obsolete careers such as Typist, Telephone operator, Gas lighter, Chimneysweep.

The chimney sweep can also attend weddings at weekends to earn a bit of cash and get a free dinner wink

Fix it yourself for £25.

Quick cruise of the Bay reveals these utter bargain parts;

Mainboard

PSU

Don't forget to unplug it and wait 30 mins though.

Managed to DC cardiovert myself recently farting about with a Dyson fan that had blown the main smoothing cap discharge circuit, leaving 300V DC nicely stored forever.

Woke me up quite a lot when I shorted it across my chest between my hands while looking at the removed board under a lens.

Beauty of that situation is that there was still plenty charge left in the cap to confirm wtf just happened.

Nice pop with an insulated screwdriver across the terminals.

James is well known for his GSOH, obviously shared by his electrical engineering design team.

With the number of log burners and stoves being installed over the last 10 years chimney sweep is more popular now than for years.

An awful lot of fashionable wood burning stoves to keep you in business as a chimney sweep these days.

At 50-60 quid for the first fireplace and then ~20 quid each for any more (the houses round here have got 3-4 fireplaces) for about an hours work, and they have a 6-8 week waiting list - they aren't doing too badly!
The local stove place has said that their sales are up over 60% from last year so chimney sweeping ain't going to go away any time soon...

See one around quite often.
