Does this work? I need to run a cable to my CCTV in the loft which is approx 25m away. I saw some in Toolstation but apparently you need two cat5 cables. What is a decent make for one of these units that will work and be reliable.

It's easier to just run 2 cat5 cables, is it not?

You could, depending on how many wires the system uses, to run 1 cat5 and just double head it.

That's a whole different kettle of jam.

We used those on the boats, albeit VGA extenders. Worked a treat.

If running cables to the loft is a pain as said on your other thread you might just be able use the web interface on the nvr.

Are you using a mesh wifi system? If so you could move a node into the loft & connect that to the nvr, this opens up the possibility of viewing the cameras on tablets & phones, in or outside the home as well as on a browser on your smart tv.

Thanks for the replies, I did a quick search and found an old thread where Vex suggested using ones with HDbaseT. Purchased one off Amazon which comes today so will update.

Sorry I meant using cat5 for hdmi.
Will it work ok with cat5e or does it need to be cat6?

HDbaseT is one of the few cases where you do need the higher bandwidth capacity of Cat6A over Cat5e in a domestic situation. It's not Gigabit LAN traffic.

I've just tried it with a spare 50m cat5 cable and it works but will only do 1920 x 1080. Would a cat 6 enable me to do 2k or 4k?

Quite possibly, I don't know which one you purchased but the first Amazon hit lists the following spec:

1080P@60Hz HDMI signals up to 230ft (70m) over Cat 5e cable
4K@60Hz HDMI signals up to 130ft (40m) over Cat 6a/7 cable
4K@60Hz HDMI signals up to 115ft (35m) over Cat 5e cable

So you can see the additional bandwidth makes a difference (which is not the case with gigabit LAN traffic). Be aware of the difference between Cat 6 & Cat 6a cable & connectors.

This is it. So to confirm I need cat6a?
