I remember in the past this was covered, but I think as part of a conversation on chairs a good few years back (certainly pre pandemic).

Anyone any recommendations for replacement casters for office/gaming chairs which are on heavy carpet ? Both my present chair (Secretlabs) and previous one (from Office World) have struggled and are flattening/wearing out my carpet, plus hard to move around.

cant help you on the carpet but Secret Labs chairs are like amazing ! I bought one recently and was blown away at how comfy and nice it is. It helped my back issue considerably.

We use clear hard mats that sit on top of the carpeted work spaces.

Same problem here with WFH for 4 of us during lockdowns and since.

Solved on both carpet and wooden floors by buying some 6mm OSB board, cutting to size, and then glueing floors tiles to them to give the same feel as the computer chair in the office, but protecting the laminates and carpets underneath.

Cheers both. Was considering something along those lines if ever I build my height adjustable desk, as my layout will be a large open space between desk and computer table. Will consider getting one of these.

BTW did you guys go for polycarbonate or polyethyelene terephtalate ? - the latter seems to have securing spikes but many of the reviews talk of it cracking.
Looks like only the PET one can be used on carpeted floors as the PC one dies not have the spikes to stop it sliding around. Might still go for it though.

I got some larger diameter rubber castors for all our office chairs to protect the floor, they really glide now and didn't cost much, don't know what they'd be like on thick carpet though sorry

Thirded. Granted it looks a bit st but it's better than ruining the carpet.

Fitted roller-blade type wheels to my chair, IMHO looks better than the (technically very good) plastic mats. Easy to find on ebay/amazon, check the size of the fitting carefully.

Think this is what I remembered. Any ideas on words for searching or examples of what to look for? I now probably will go with a matt, but I do note how many people report them cracking over time.

They last about 2 years. I've just thrown mine away and placed an offcut of carpet on the carpet to protect it.

Based on your usage metric, that is £15 a year, for zero faff.

Nearer 3, by my reckoning. But as already said it's cheap enough just to buy a new one.

We have a chair mat from here:https://www.floortexeurope.co.uk/uk-chair-mats.

I was supplied by O/H's employer so I've no idea of cost but it's lasting much better then the previous one we bought (can't remember make) that cracked and broke up after a couple of years with two chairs rolling about every day.

Oddly enough, I'm finding that the extra friction of the carpet is actually more convenient for me; it helps the chair stay in one place.

I was using these, as the cheapest option:
