USB drive problems

I borrowed my wifes USB C memory stick to do a recovery image for a device that only has usb c.
Before I put the image on it I copied the contents of the stick (2 seasons of some TV show totalling about 120gb).
Then once I had the image done I formatted the drive back again and tried to put the files back on.
It said there was not enough space, so I obviously messed up the formatting process. So I did that again and then tried to put the files back on and now there is enough space but now its running super slow like 2Mb/sec onto the stick.
Should obviously be much faster than that?
