Here’s a right technological tangle, with which I would be grateful for any assistance.

I have:
iPhone SE (2020) with up-to-date iOS.
2nd Gen (720p HD, c.2017?) Apple TV.
Samsung 40” HD “smart” TV of some sort c.2013 (no Bluetooth etc)

I want to screen mirror via Apple TV (or connect direct to TV via HDMI cable and adaptor) my iPhone when using my cycling/trainer app to show the video/instructions/power output on my TV, but only for the visual stuff: I want to play the audio through earphones/AirPods connected to the phone. However, try as I may, I can only get audio with the visual through the TV, regardless of how I connect.

Am I right in thinking that the iPhone will only send the audio and visual as one single stream to the Apple TV (or the TV itself) which cannot be “split” until its shown/heard on the TV at the very end of this whole process? And that the only way to get audio via earphones/AirPods is via a new Apple TV 4K, or at the very least a 3.5mm-BT transmitter from the TV to whichever compatible BT earphones I choose?

I think you're right, I'm not aware of how to split the audio and video from a screen mirror session.

May be a stupid question, but can you not connect your AirPods to the AppleTV as well? That's what I do.

I think that's only available on the newer Apple TVs.
