Got a weird problem with my Virgin Hub 4.

Had my upgrade from 500mb to 1gig via Volt perk done months ago. But.... My speed has never improved. Still around 450mb and never over 500odd.

I contacted Virgin and they kindly got me to turn it off and on again 20 times, and sent me two plug in wifi extenders despite signal never being an issue.

I did the SamKnows speed test confirming 1gb service to the line, but its like the router or something is still set to 500mb.

I had a look in router settings, couldn't see anything obvious.

Any ideas?

Do you have two computers? Plug them in via the ethernet ports and do simulataneous speed tests. Does the total reported still add up to 500Mbps? If so, then VM haven't upgraded your speed at all no matter what it says at their end. Don't let them fob you off with wifi extenders. Make sure you do the tests via directly plugged in computers and not via Wifi and not via Powerline adapters.

Sounds like they didn't apply the Volt upgrade

When i called them to apply Volt, i was told a day but it applied the speed increase 10 minutes later. We get a consistent 980 down and 50 up

How specifically have you tested the download speed?

What device(s) are you using?

Connecting via ethernet cable is the only way to check this. Virgin Hub wifi is notoriously crap especially if you in another room.

When you're satisfied you have the speed you need through a cable then buy yourself a decent router/mesh system and put the hub in modem mode

Could the device/pc be the limiting factor?

My iphone can get well over 500 on wi-fi / 5g

Good advice to ditch the onboard Wifi and go mesh but don't necessarily put it into modem mode - many mesh systems are just Wifi Access Points, they still depend on the router for routing and firewall functions. It's a good idea to disable the crap onboard Wifi once the mesh is in place though.

Have you maybe discovered the WiFi on the device you're testing on isn't good for much more than 450Mbit/sec?

I'm testing using my Pixel 6 Pro and my Mrs iPhone. I've used my own Dell laptop as well.

I've used SamKnows and the Speedtest app as well as Google's speed test.

I'm in line of sight of the router when testing.

I've even checked on Wifi Analysis app that there isnt a neighbour clogging the channel.

Did you plug the laptop in via Ethernet?

I'd like to know as well. Testing via WiFi is invalid. Various combinations of chipset, channel and band selection, house composition, wall construction, damp levels, microwave oven use, Bluetooth, as well as neighbouring access points will all have unpredictable effect. There are so many variables that the only way to test is plugged in via Ethernet.

Yep, unfortunately a expectation to get anywhere close to a gig over wifi on a old vm hub is unrealistic.

I would expect a gig via ethernet.

a gig over wifi is pretty challenging unless the client is latest generation top end hardware.

I suspect this is why virgin set up the samknows check, so they can show gig to the hub, and point out it isn't their fault your wireless clients can't achieve it.

Surprised the servicedesk script doesn't make this point.

Yep obviously the access point also needs to be able to support gig connections & generally this would be a Wi-Fi 6 device at a minimum.

As ever the question comes back to is a gig via Wi-Fi needed or is it desired ?

Pretty much everyone has said. The VM 4 hub is quite poor when compared to other folk...and ultimately can't support highspeeds at all. I went with new access points (TP link, Wifi 6) in the end as was getting very tired with the speed and coverage. Difference is night and day. It is however another expense plus the added faff of wiring things into a switch, etc etc...
