I've just reached the end of my contract with Plusnet and I'll be moving house next month. FTTP is available at the house I'll be moving to. I've had a quick look around for offers and have widdled it down to:
  • NOW - FTTC - 40Mb/10Mb - 12 months - £20/month (I've read that the router might be rubbish and the SR203 is a worthwhile upgrade) + cash back
  • Plusnet - FTTP - 74Mb/20Mb - 24 months - £23.99/month (£50 reward card included)
  • Vodafone - FTTP - 74Mb/20Mb - 24 months - £22/month + cashback
I'll be locked into two price rises with the 24-month contracts. Is FTTP worth the move or should I stay with FTTC? It's just me using the broadband.

Edit: The house I'm moving to is literally around the corner from the cabinet it's connected to.

I would be going FTTP every time if it is available and only a couple of £ a month more.

Watch out for those price rises. It’s something like 4% + cpi

Fttp for sure. Think of it as future proofing to have a fibre connection installed.

I’m doing the same, currently on a 70/20 fttc product and am waiting on Openreach to connect me up to fibre. 40 quid or so a month with Sky for 500/70 was a bit of a no brainer for me.

Looking forward to seeing the back of copper for internet access!

Appreciate the replies. I don't need the extra speed that FTTP gives (I've managed fine with my 40Mb/10Mb connection). I was thinking about FTTP as future-proofing but I'm mindful of the built-in price hikes in the contract. I could be looking at roughly a 15% price hike in April (if the CPI remains at 11.1% + the 3.9% increase built into the contract).

Main advantage of fttp is the speed is consistent and doesn’t slow down when everyone else wants to stream box sets on a weekend. Don’t expect miracles though, all you need is “fast enough” so in that respect makes no difference if you have 3, 5 or 900 mb broadband. E.g this afternoon I’ve struggled watching the rugby on prime video. Not my problem by theirs.

FTTP, get rid of all the copper.

Is the Openreach offering not synchronous then?

As you're moving you might find you're only offered FTTP contracts. They're keen to get rid of copper.

We just switched - it's been available for a couple of years and BT was increasingly sending offers. Had 80/20 FTTC and now have Full Fibre 100 which is supposed to be 100/20 but BT give 150/30 and it tests at those speeds. Can't tell any difference now from how it was before - but it's £2/mth cheaper.

If Openreach need to drill a new hole in the wall to bring it it, try and pre-empt that - the girl that did ours would only drill from the inside out and blew half a brick away as the drill broke through.

FTTP.

My old house was a town house, had a FTTC connection that used to drop out occasionally, red light on router, Openreach would come out and replace wiring etc every 6 months.

Switched to FTTP with Cityfibre though Vodafone and it was very stable.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to give Vodafone a miss - the earliest Openreach appointment available is December 20th.

FTTC is available at my new address, according to the products shown based on the post code.

I might go with Vodafone. Does anyone know if the CPI increase based on the pre-discount or discounted monthly price?

It's not about speed/bandwidth, it's the low latency you want/need.

Yep to FTTP.

I pay £30 a month to BT for 75Mbps. I could get much faster speeds, but don't need it - 75 is good.

Go with FTTP if you can.

The main reason is it's rock stable, speeds don't depend on weather, and don't recall the last drop in years and years of use.

The extra speed is there if you want/need it in the future. But the above is the main reason.

Thanks, everyone. I’ve seen the light and I’m going with FTTP. Just trying to decide between Plusnet and Vodafone (both Openreach).

Edit: Does anyone have any feedback for Vodafone FTTP?

Anyone? Keen to hear about Vodafone (and whether I should steer clear).

Well i was with Zen for 12 years (first with copper broadband, then fttc then fttp)

the FTTP has been so ridiculously reliable that I decided to go with Sky about 18months ago, and touch wood, I haven't had a single reason to contact them.

Whether it will stay that way is a different matter- but it really is very reliable!
