lost Google story feed on Android phone

A couple of days ago the stories that normally pop up on pressing the Google app button on my Samsung phone stopped popping up. Instead I got an arrowed box saying 'More Stories' but when I pressed that it said there were no stories. I'd done nothing to make any of this stuff happen.
I tried uninstalling Google via the app icon but there was no uninstall option for that. The nearest thing to it, disabling and then re-enabling it, had no effect.
I eventually managed to upgrade the Google app to the newest version but there are still no stories. There was some sort of 'customise' option but all that's done is given me a box saying 'no cards available right now', whatever that means.
I'm a bit too old to work all this stuff out so would be v grateful for any suggestions.

Forget this, the stories have reappeared.

I get exactly the same sometimes

It's like google wipes it all and starts again

I figured it was petulance on Google's part, because my Google account is a grandfathered free Workspace account, and they truly hate those.
