Something has happened to my iPhone 13 Promax and I cannot work it out, after an hour or so of Googling.

If I go into photos, select a photo to share and try to email it, my phone gives a metallic beep and it doesn't send.

If I write an email, click on the paperclip, select a photo to send, it works fine.

Does anyone more familiar with iPhone have any ideas please?

Which email app are you using? Doesn’t sound like Apple Mail as you don’t click on a paper clip to add a photo.

Maybe a compatibility issue with your mail app?

Mine is working fine - iPhone 14 Pro - just tried it.

I assume you're selecting the photo and then pressing the 'share' button on the bottom left?

Have you tried resetting your phone?

Is the picture stored on your phone, or just a thumbnail of a cloud copy?

Some of the updates in iOS 16 have been breaking things lately... Have you recently applied an update and/or is there an update waiting?

FWIW - 16.0.3 broke importing photos into 'Photos' on my Mac. 16.1 fixed it.

Correct and yes.

I am not sure how to check, but even ones I took with the phone (rather than receiving and saving) are similarly affected.

Good point. There was an update waiting and I am downloading it now.

I’ve checked here and no issues using the Outlook app from inside Photos… app version 4.2243.1, on IOS 16.0 if that helps.

Okay, so I am updated to 16.1.1 and it makes no difference. Same app version as you.

It still doesn't work if I click the share button bottom left (square with an upward arrow).

I have tested the 4 mail accounts on my phone separately. They will all send and receive mail. They will all send a photo, if I start an email, click the paperclip and add a photo.

I am far from technical, but it seems to me that the photos app is not playing with Outlook for some reason.

Edited to add, I have consulted with our in-house teenage technical support and they are flummoxed.

Just spoken to an Apple support bod in Illinois. Quite a dry and funny chap.

He doesn't know either, but thinks it's an Outlook / Photos compatibility issue brought about by a software update. He thinks it may resolve in a few days.

If not I need to back up my phone, reset factory settings and start anew. Which sounds like a PITA.

Why are you using Outlook?

I have it on my work phone, it's a dreadful mobile client - fortunately, I still have the option to use Apple Mail.

Surely the answer is to send the photos via Apple Mail.

This.

I have Apple Mail for 6 accounts - business and personal. Far easier. Most of the time (like 99.999% of the time) it works faultlessly.

If I recall correctly it was integration with calendar. But I don't recall exactly.

I run my business Outlook calendar through my Apple Calendar - sorry, I know that's pretty useless information. frown

Really not sure why you'd be having problems. I assume the same over wifi and 4G/5G? Just wondering if you're on low data / data saver mode maybe?

Nothing has changed.

Same wifi.

Not on low data.

Has the update messed with the Outlook client app access to photos? (privacy settings)

Had that before when the Outlook app had auto updated and not been opened since the update applied. Opening Outlook starts its updating mailbox process and when that finished the sharing photos to outlook for sending starts working again.

OK here's weird:

This morning, all the emails that didn't come through yesterday showed up in my inbox.

So, for some reason:

If I opened a photo and attached an email to it to send it, the email got delayed somewhere for 24 hours.

If I opened an email and attached a photo to it to send it, it was delivered straight away.

Pick the bones out of that if you will.
