Can anyone tell me in simple terms how to stop windows 10 updating completely ?

I am happy with the way my laptop runs never had a problem except when it does update certain bits apparently it's not suitable for upgrade to new version of windows ?

If I don't stop it my laptop updates and then takes ages to do anything
I then have to restore it to before the update

I have gone into start run services.msc and disabled windows update
also disabled windows orchestrator service but it keeps starting itself banghead

I also go into task manager and stop both if I find them running but they start again

It's getting to be a pain in the ...

Any help much appreciated but if you can make it simple please bow

Have you tried just leaving it for a couple hours? It might just be sorting things out. I haven't had any problems with recent updates. Though the one a few weeks ago took its time to sort itself out.

Edit - it's probably the same update as it said my PC wasn't suitable for Windows 11 as well.

Yes I have tried leaving it but no joy it takes ages to do anything afterwards
The times I have failed to stop updates it takes ages to apply updates up to an hour sometimes

I have left it update and tried it and for some reason it takes ages to even open my e mails or to
browse the internet even browsing his site is a nightmare

Then i have the pain to restore it to before the update and try and stop it again

Set your network connection to a metered connection and it won’t download updates over it.

Just bear in mind without any updates you’re leaving your PC open to any exploits of any erroneous code that is subsequently patched in an update.

Can’t really help with the underlying problem, but maybe telling us what release of Win10 you’re on, and what it’s trying to update too - will help track down the issue.

Assuming it's just being really, really laggy, try leaving it on for a couple of days. My laptop is about 2 years old and low spec so I have to leave it for a day to sort itself out.

Dual boot Linux?
I stopped using windows on my own devices years ago for reasons similar to what you're experiencing. I only use it at work where it's SEP.

No idea how to find out what release I have sorry

All I know is it was ok with updates until it came up with
your system isn't suitable for windows update to latest version or words to that effect
I assume its windows 11 ?

Go and look in Settings, System. Google is your friend if you’re not sure how to do something.

Your PC is probably too old (and missing a particular additional chip) to take Windows 11, so just click OK or ignore the message.

You’re right, not that old released in 2021, first half. Updates are 21H2 and 22H2 (doesn’t seem to have been a 22H1).

Your PC should update to these sequentially (but MS will try to get you to Win11 early as you’ve found). Let it update, and as a post above just leave it on to sort itself out for a day or so. My home PC is a couple of years old and also takes a while to stop disk thrashing and be properly repo side.

If you look in Settings, Windows Update you can see what it’s trying to do, and whether it’s finished yet.

What spec is the laptop? Does it have a SSD or normal hard disk?

Patching Windows without an SSD means a lot of waiting...

The above posters suggestion about telling Windows you are on a metered connection will stop updates. A quick Google will show you where the option is. Just remember your laptop won’t be as secure if you don’t update.

Your laptop runs a CPU launched in 2018 that has performance equal to a mid tier CPU from 2008. It also only supports your RAM in single channel mode which means it runs less effectively than another laptop with 4GB RAM that supports dual channel. That’s why it runs poorly after an update but ultimately what you get when you buy cheap.

As others have posted, setting the internet to a metered connection will stop automatic updates.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/metere...

You can also do the same thing in the registry but if you're not familiar with editing the registry this method is probably safer.

I did this with mine running W10 when I got fed up of continual updates and it ran fine. The snag was that it didn't always update the Defender files and so I ended up doing that manually. I don't know if this was down to the metered setting or just my set-up, but it's worth watching and also checking with MS if there's any security patches you might have missed.

Unfortunately this. 4 Cores and 8 GB of RAM is pretty much the absolute minimum these days.

Not that you are asking about buying a new laptop but this looks pretty good for £470

If you do a search on google for "sordum windows update blocker" something will come up.

Please do your own due diligence etc on it though. It's what I'm using.

Once in a while worth re-enabling and updating everything.
