There's a guy at work bragging he's paid £3,500 for a new Alienware laptop.

Any PH'ers that own these high end machines, why are they worth it?

I'd asked the guy himself but he's a terrible braggart (claims he was being recruited by St. John's Ambulance on a £100,000 salary to be a nationwide trainer but turned it down because he wants to remain on the frontline)

I used to own an alienware laptop about 15 years ago, these days I don't think there is much point in paying for the brand, they are owned by Dell so you can likely get a Dell XPS cheaper. There are also more brands to compete now that offer really high end laptops for much less money.

I have last years model of this, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Razer-Blade-15-Display-Ch...

Still probably not as quick as a desktop half the price and less battery than a much cheaper productivity laptop but well made and lets me play a little from somewhere other than my desk (although near a plug). They also get very hot but they cram a lot into a small package hence the price.

Hope that helps (i.e. a desktop/games console is probably a better choice 9/10 times) but they are kinda cool.

I needed an upgrade on my desktop recently and wondered if it was worth a laptop instead. the conclusion I came to was that a much better solution was a £600 laptop and a decent mid range desktop.

I suspect that the above is generally correct, or at least more cost-efficient, but coincidentally this review was on TheRegister today - gaming laptop with external water cooling!

I picked up a brace of Legion 5 Pro laptops for me and my other half about a year after they were first released, 2019 or 2020, can't quite remember. They were around £1300-1500 each and were well specced for the day. Still going strong and automatically defaults to run most things on high detail levels.

I wanted to build a new gaming rig for use on the TV but it was around the time video cards became unobtainable and equally stupidly expensive so ended up getting one for me instead, missus' was to replace her old Alienware laptop that was sporting an old geforce 960 and was getting a bit out of date for anything that required decent graphics.

Unless you move around lots, a desktop is better.

Or a SFFPC… half way house.

I’ve a decent ish gaming laptop but it just makes a racket from fans.
I’ve had it apart with better thermal paste, undervolted etc, but it’s still a bit silly.
Also munches battery at full whack.

As said, fine if you’re going to LAN parties all the time or travel all the time.

But yeah, SFFPC is more vogue now for such users.
