I have a twitter username but there are no circumstances where I would give the world's richest man $8/month for a blue tick.

I don’t personally know a single person who uses Twitter.

Like the majority of twitter I don't have a blue tick, and as such I don't need one in the future.
So theirs no financial issue.

Far to many people making a meal out of the situation.

The majority who are famous enough to want their accounts verified can presumably pay the small fee to do so. After all they are likely making money out of their online presence.

Would have been better to have a third option of currently don't pay and won't be paying in the future.

I use it as a carefully curated news feed. I've never posted and never will.

If I'm ever unfortunate enough to step out of that by mistake I never failed to be stunned by the staggering inanity and stupidity out there. What a mindless fkhole.

I'm a bit spoiled by the people I do pay attention to who possess minds that function.

This will make the blue tick lose all its credibility. "Verified" status was supposed to be so you knew someone purporting to be a celebrity, etc., is actually who they say they are. Now it'll just be a flag for narcissists.

it is the most un user friendly social media , I am truly surprised how successful it is, I think it won't be around for long

Depends on what I get. If it's about more impressions for 'my' content up, then certainly not, don't really care how many impressions I get.

But if rumours are true Musk wants to compete with tiktok and YouTube, I will probably pay for ad free access to long form video content.

I currently pay 12 quid a month for YouTube. If I can view the same content on twitter for cheaper, that would probably win me over.

I've never used it either but was reading about Mastodon earlier... Looks interesting.

For growth you need money and no VC will invest in this. Only option would be crypto that has been done to death, so in limbo land unless the landscape changes.

I have a blue tick and it is unclear if that gets lost if I dont pay.

When it was verified a few bits of ID was required but now its just pay a few quid and boom.

It devalues the meaning of the icon as it is no longer ‘verified’ more just a paid sticker.

Musk does not seem to know what he is doing.

The technology is easy. Yet nothing else has taken off, and Elon bought Twitter instead of creating yet another one.

Why would Mastodon do any better than GETTR, Gab, or Parler etc?

I thought he bought it because he couldn't get out the deal.

Not sure I agree with that.

The base user functionality is easy. The management of millions of users, the security issues that presents, scalability to that level, the content moderation on that scale (whether you agree with it or not) - all that most definitely ain't easy.

However, in the end, it IS the market - its like estate agents - they get money for being the market maker, not for the actual function they perform, which has next to no tangible value - the value is all in the marketplace.

Yes, you’ll lose the blue tick if you don’t pay up.

I feel like he bought it because his ego kicked in again and this is probably the biggest ego fail he's had to deal with.
