MacBook Pro speakers pop, then all bass drops out.

Late 2017 MacBook Pro. 15". A1707 model.
If I'm listening to something through the speakers there'll suddenly be a loud pop, then all the bass then drops out, usually if I turn the volume up past three blobs. Next time I turn the computer on it's working again as normal, until something loud enough comes through the speakers to trigger the same thing again.
Has anyone encountered this and found a solution?
