Mum’s PC has been upgraded multiple times. It’s getting slower and slower (thanks Microsoft). We’re also having terrible problems with Hotmail/Office/Outlook and so now seems like to good time to set up new accounts with new passwords on a new PC.

The PC needs to run Word and Excel, browse the internet and send/receive emails. Hardly a big ask. Can someone recommend a new Tower PC without monitor that will do all these things without taking 10 minutes to boot up and without getting the Katherine Wheel of Doom with every click of the mouse. I do not want to run into the same problem in a couple of years so future proofing is important.

Thanks

Dave.

What's the spec of the current one?

It probably just needs a wipe and a fresh install doing.

It’s 90 minutes drive away so I can’t say. Was upgrade 5+ years ago. I’d really like to start again with new unit as there always seems to be complications with an old machine.

For a similar use case I just got a dell optiplex 3080 s/h from eBay & it was like new.

Has a i5 10500 (10th gen, current cpu range 12th gen, so only a couple of years old), 8GB ram & 256GB nvme m.2 drive.

It could possibly use a second 8GB dimm for memory & may need a additional storage drive but that depends on use case.

As the optiplex range is more business focused I expect he’ll get a good 7-10 years out of this one.

The price was £250.

As for monitor use, without knowing either the monitor make/model or how the current one is connected & what alternative ports it has its impossible to be definitive.

Also I’m unsure why you would need to creat new email & 365 accounts rather than sign into the existing ones on the new platform, if there is user error at play it’s just as likely to be present on a new machine with new accounts in fairly short order.

Does it have to be a desktop? A modestly priced laptop or chromebook will do all those tasks and is less susceptible to bugging out/slowing down over time.

Why is a laptop less susceptible to those issues?

Honestly this is likely to be a perfectly viable and the cheapest answer. If it doesn't have an SSD or NVME drive in there then put one in (four screws and replacing a couple of cables) and a fresh copy of Windows and you'll be amazed how it feels like a new PC.

If you're not tech savvy then it may appear daunting but it is quite straightforward and youtube videos always help.

Good point about the monitor. The old connection may not be compatible. Something else to check.

Ok, I’ll take a look next time I’m visiting. Good point.

Interesting could you clarify why this is the case?
