These two:

https://www.currys.co.uk/products/lenovo--ideapad-...

https://www.currys.co.uk/products/hp-envy-x360-15....

The latter listed, the HP, has an AMD Ryzen 5 processor. Is it up to the same sort of standard as the Intel Core i5 in the Lenovo?
A big use of the laptop is for films online and Youtube etc, and in regards of the screen quality the Lenovo just wins as far as I can tell. It's also a replacement for a Lenovo yoga, so it will feel familiar, I guess.

The HP has a larger screen, which could be a bonus, but it's just the processor which is an unknown.

Can anyone assist?

I had the same concerns but the Ryzen 5 laptop processors are well regarded, and were in many ways better than the Intel equivalent.

Thanks. I knew from a previous life at an IT distributor that AMD did then hold their own against Intel, but a lot could have changed in the much time since. I'll go and have a look at them both tomorrow. I once had a HP laptop, and it was flimsier than a Friday afternoon Fiat, so that will also be a consideration!

I quite like the idea of these 2 in 1 laptops so any feedback you can give would be appreciated.

Both those will do you fine. Just look up the benchmarks if you are worried.

I’ve tried laptops with Amd, Intel and now Apple Silicon. AMD and Intel are broadly equivalent. Apple Silicon is very energy efficient and would be my default choice for a laptop now, esp with energy prices the way they are.

You could treat something like a M1 Macbook Air like a phone, just plug it in overnight and use it all day. Won’t be able to do that on a Intel or AMD powered laptop.

With my M1 Macbook Pro, I hardly use the powerbrick during the working day. The battery just lasts 7 - 8 hours easy. With the same sort of use, my 2018 Intel Macbook Pro would be flat in 3 to 4 hours.

I've had god knows how many laptops, and genuinely, the current Lenovo one of these is replacing is my favourite, as an all rounder, of the lot. A few thoughts.

The stylus the HP comes with is a great idea. Being touchscreen the display becomes a smeary mess VERY quickly. Another downside is that to rotate facias the laptop needs to be as thin as possible, so a CD/DVD drive isn't viable. One problem I have also had with my current one is that the back and forth laptop/tablet mode has taken its toll on the trim securing the screen, to the point that it has failed. All said though, I like the concept enough that I'm looking for the same as a replacement.

Interesting thoughts, thanks. A Macbook air would blow the budget mind!

It took a whole 4 posts before someone suggested a Mac 4x the price of OPs requirements? Pistonheads, for shame!

Asus Vivobooks can be had with an OLED screen which may be better for watching films.

They come with both AMD and Intel variants.

The CPU benchmark on the Ryzen 5 is slightly higher than the i5, but in real terms performance would be virtually the same.

I have a previous generation Ryzen 7 5800H in my laptop and it is awesome. I run it in whisper mode all the time so it runs at a quarter of its speed and it doesn't even break a sweat.

“ASUS Vivobook Pro OLED M3401QA 14 Inch 2.8K Laptop (AMD Ryzen 7-5800H, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, Backlit KB) £549.99 (Prime Exclusive) @ Amazon”

Sounds reasonable.

A MacBook air is like £850 not sure how that equates to 4 times a £750 machine, although thats out of stock.

The Lenovo the OP posted is £769. Have seen M1 Macbook Air’s on discount for near that, also can get Apple Certified refurbs for that price. I think brand new from the Apple store, they are £999. £230 extra is probably a bit less than 4x the price. If I were in the OPs shoes, I’d try to bag a M1 Macbook Air on Black Friday, last year they had over £100 off. I’d certainly stump up an extra couple of hundred quid for the extra battery life alone.

I noticed your type of post is really common on pistonheads, along with ad hominem attacks for having a different opinion. Really spoils it. Just the lack of civility, there is no need for it. Often makes me want to cancel my account and leave. I probably will. Not really getting much enjoyment out of this forum anymore.

The nearly 10 years old i7 processor in my 2013 MacBook Pro can do all that, and some (light video processing). I've not kept with the CPU developments but surely any computer on sale today has a CPU that will deliver 99.99% of what people need (games aside).

It does seem a fantastic deal, but one thing I omitted to mention was that I'd like a two in one device, where the screen folds back to make it like a tablet. Also for the benefit of others with other suggestions thumbup

Not to get into the intel/amd/m1 war just wanted to say you really need to dig into the specs & work out exactly what cpu & it’s generation to ensure you fairly comparing them.

I had a look recently there were lots of older CPU’s eg i5-gen8 which are 4 years old now.

Not necessarily a massive issue just pointing out not all i5’s or Ryzen7’s are equal.

I have a Ryzen 7 4800H in a gaming laptop, which is 18 month ish old now and it still seems like a lightning fast CPU to me, had no issues with the CPU.

This is a possibility.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dell-Inspiron-Touchscreen...

No stylus pen mind, which I'd ideally like and isn't 'full HD' 1080x720p, so lower quality screen?

The Lenovo doesn't come with a stylus as standard, but one of these will sort that out - https://www.lambda-tek.com/Lenovo-GX80U45007~sh/B4...

I'm also wondering if the HP with a 15.something screen will feel a bit big when being used as a laptop. Anyone any thoughts? (was going to go to Currys to have a look, but full of man-flu)
