What console for a 15-y-o?
Discussion
I don't do gaming so have no idea...
He has a Switch, likes Civilisation 6, Zelda, Mario Odyssey(??) and has enjoyed playing a Star Wars game and other stuff on a friend's Xbox.
I was thinking of an Xbox S but have no idea (I might have mentioned! ) whether he's better off just sticking with the Switch.
The TV is only HD, we use a Chromecast for streaming and have decent FTTP internet.

Ok, that hadn't occurred to me! However it's not that straightforward.
He's a complete bookworm, to the point that it's affecting his eyes, and deaf so interacting with others is hard, particularly after a day at school. Fortunately he is very self contained so not remotely bothered anyway.
We're having to remind him to stop reading and do something involving looking further away so his eyes get a break. But his younger brother has been borrowing the Switch which causes arguments when I have to take it off him.
They do sometimes play together though, and with their sister.
So I guess the question should be: what console for a family?

Same answers as above really. PS4/5 or X Box. The industry standards at the moment. He's a complete bookworm, to the point that it's affecting his eyes, and deaf so interacting with others is hard, particularly after a day at school. Whatever they prefer or friends have usually wins the argument, my 2 boys are 11 & 12
We have xbox one, we have a ps4 and x-box S in the living room, wife and I both play those and we will play that as a family to for games like Lego Dimensions, Minecraft & Minecraft Dungeons
Youngest plays his x-box one a lot, as do his mates but he has a switch & DS also but he doesn't much use them
Oldest prefers Nintendo as do his friend group so mostly plays switch, Wii U, DS or Gameboy (he likes retro pokemon games a lot) - he has an xbox one but doesnt play it much
Sounds like your son might like minecraft, there are a lot of things you can do in there like making circuits, crafting, building etc etc

Agreed on get what his mates have. Current machines and games are all very polished, so recommending one machine over another is futile.
My lad has a switch, which is great for him as most of his mates have one too. Favourite games at the moment are Minecraft, Rocket League (which I also enjoy) and Spellbreak. All with online play! They usually have a group chat going at the same time on Facetime, so really interactive discussing tactics or what went on at school whilst waiting to join a game.

Gaming PCs are expensive. Consider the Steam Deck, which is a Switch-style handheld that runs PC games.
Thinking about it, that might not be suitable if you're trying to give your son's eyes a break from reading. You probably need a console to use with the tv, or a normal pc.
