Why did I even think this would be sodding easy!

New PC, have used a PS4 pad before using software but this proved trouble some so thought chuff it I will buy an Xbox controller it should be easy right?

WRONG

PC utterly refuses to see the controller in Bluetooth mode which is how I managed it before, it is charged, has batteries etc, all been done right, turn on with the X, press pair, and the stupid box just sits there going duuuuhhhh.
Any ideas folks?

Am using a basic tiny plug in bluetooth thing, I dont use it for anything else so dont know if it is working or not. But it was fine on old PC for years.

If it’s one of the new pads don’t you need the wireless dongle for it rather than using Bluetooth?

There are a few varieties of XB controllers aren’t there?
Mine was a specific Windows one with a wire but you didn’t need the wire.
I think some older ones need the wire?

I’ve got one and it works fine to my motherboard BT on three PCs.

It also works fine to my Apple TV 4K.

Haven't tried using a Xbox controller over bluetooth with a PC, although it worked fine on a Mac.

If you can plug the controller into the PC with the USB cable it should just work and save a load of bluetooth ball ache.

I believe I read somewhere that you need a certain model number to allow it to work on a regular bluetooth connection rather than an Xbox. Mine has model number 1708 written in the battery compartment which is the one I think you need. As said before though, I got bored of it dropping out or deciding not to connect 1 time in 10, so I now use it with a micro USB connected and it works perfectly with no need for batteries.

Apologies if this is how you've done it, but you have to press and hold the pair button down for several seconds until the light starts flashing on the controller before you can connect it.

As above.
Also plug it in and do a firmware update through the Xbox accessories app.

I went out and bought a USB3 2 metre cable, it just refused to work despite endless searching for issues.

Thanks for replies folks.
