Hi chaps,

Just after some advice/tips/pointers for PH’s resident Luddite (or computing idiot, at least). I’m looking for a chromebook for our son so he can access Google Classroom and complete and upload his homework without having to borrow his Mum’s laptop and having to bugger about logging her out of her accounts and generally buggering things about.

What do I need to know, what do I need to spend?

Wouldn’t Argos or John Lewis’ budget end machine suffice? I would imagine a 14 inch screen would be better so I had a hold of reading his work. Portability isn’t so important as it won’t be leaving the house. It’s only going to see pretty light duties and I don’t expect it to take him through university- just for the next few years.

For example

What would be “better”?

If I’m told I need to spend more I shall but please let me know why!

Many thanks.

Your thought process and criteria are sound.

But buy a recent machine. Lots of Chrome OS devices get a refresh/update every couple of years. And new devices receive OS and security updates for a period of 8 years.

But retailers are great at selling old stock at what seem like attractive prices. As with the link you shared. That particular model will stop receiving updates and security patches in June 2024, which is really on!y 1.5 years away.

Use the following link to determine the expected use life of any Chrome OS devices with regards to updates;
