Hi guys, I'm looking for a replacement MFP for my 75-year old Mum. She previously had an Epson which lasted years and then packed in. I'd probably go for an inkjet as it'll be low volume, it'll need to print in colour and if possible have duplex.

I did look at printers a while back but every half-decent model I seem to find had been discontinued. Just wondering if any of you fine folk have any brand and/or model recommendations at all?

Canon is the best brand for MFPs in my experience. Least bother once set up.

But they all throw wobblies from time to time. Esp the scanner function, with Windows 10 anyway.

Lasers tend to be more reliable as printers, but are more expensive and not as versatile.

Just replaced my mothers old Canon with an Epson Expression XP-6105. Was £89.99 in Curry’s at the weekend. Does duplex and separate inks. Did consider a Brother but she didn’t need the AFD and the Epson had more compatible ink options to keep costs down long term.

Seems ok so far. She managed to scan into PDF herself yesterday without calling technical support (me!).

Budget ?

When you say will need to print colour, is this for photos or just general colour printing?

If it will be a low print volume, then a laser is going to be far less hassle than an inkjet.

Colour lasers are bulky though, and not the best choice if decent photo printing is needed, for general use though they're hard to beat if budget permits.

Brother are a good choice, third party toners are readily available.

I have this one and can highly recommend it, been flawless:

same printer without ADF is a bit cheaper:

Compatible toners readily available on Amazon etc, but you'd be surprised how little toner is used in everyday printing.

Out of interest, I just tried printing some photos on my Brother Laser (linked to above) ...

Pleasantly surprised how good the photos printed, and that's just onto (decent) plain paper.

In the driver, there is an option to print on Glossy Paper, I would expect photo quality to be much improved on Glossy paper.

Lasers have clearly moved on somewhat.

She's put aside £250 for the initial purchase but I'm guessing she'll want to include the initial ink purchase in that as well. This is for general colour printing, usually just documents which may feature some pictures / artwork.

Can't recommend the Brother laser highly enough, just check the size.

I have a HP MFP, sorry I can't recall the model number but i've had it around 5-6 years now and I bought it from Argos for about £60.

Still going strong, mainly used for printing postage labels for a home run ebay business. for the money it's been great, I would recommend HP as a brand to consider
