Apple Mac Studio... M1 Max / Ultra / M2...
Discussion
I'm trying to get a handle on Apple's staggered release stages of upgrades to different models. I believe that the Mac Pro is still Intel. And that the Mac Studio is M1, but Macbook Pro is now M2... and so expect M2 in Mac Studio soon, or not?
Is now a good time to get an M1 Mac Studio or is there an M2 around the corner. If so, will the M2 also have a Max and Ultra spec?

It’s still early to work out cadence of changes. Air went to M2 18 months after it got the M1. Maybe we can expect the same time frame for the other models? There’s supposed to be an event next month but nothing guaranteed. Sites like macrumors.com are good for following this sort of stuff.
I’m hoping for an M2 or M2 Pro mini to replace a seven year old iMac.

This is always a good read to know if you should upgrade. https://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#mac
Bear in mind that volume deliveries on Mac Studios only really got going 3-4 months ago. It’s still a pretty new machine, basically.
The M1 Pro in the base Mac Studio has a lot more grunt than the M2. I think it will be a while yet before we see an M2 Pro, so I’d say buy now, don’t wait.
Am very happy with mine, BTW.

There's likely to be an Apple "event" during late October. This may well include more Macs / more M2 variants etc. I'd wait and see what's announced at the next event before making a decision.
That said, I've got an M1 Pro MBP, and no matter what I throw at it, there's no fan action, it doesn't get hot, and it doesn't slow down. This includes 4k video editing. The M1 series seems to be more than adequate for pretty much every workload that you can think of.

Def noted. I'll wait and see what they say in a month as I can wait. Coming from an i7 64GB Windows7 PC, used for media production, that must be ten years old now... it'll be the first big upgrade in a long time. To be fair, the Windows rig is still great: fast / no issues. Still as good as new. But getting into 4K / 6K video etc, it's showing it's age. That said, I've got an M1 Pro MBP, and no matter what I throw at it, there's no fan action, it doesn't get hot, and it doesn't slow down. I've just got a base Mac Studio to replace a mildly upgraded 2010 Mac Pro. Still setting it up, but certainly seems much faster and snappier. I miss the internal storage and expandability of the old tower so having to spend more on external storage and hubs.
I already had a couple of external 4/5-bay enclosures, so it was no further expense to me (other than a nice new CalDigit Thunderbolt 4 hub) when I upgraded from my i7 iMac.Hadn't realised how 'slow' the iMac had become until the first time I started up my 'basic' Studio
I'd wager it will be at least 18 months before the next gen Mac Studio is released, as the 4 levels of performance (2 CPU options, and 2 GPU options per CPU config) available currently will suffice for at least that long.

Pretty sure the Base Studio is the MAX rather than the Pro, however its the slightly cheaper 24 core gpu, with 32 core an upgrade. Just under £1.9k for the base from Costco (for Members). The M1 Pro in the base Mac Studio has a lot more grunt than the M2. I did fancy one, however I purchased a 16" MBP instead, pretty good prices on the standard ones at Costco. £2,900 for the 16" max at the moment, however (probably putting them all to studio at that time) you just couldn't get one for months, so i ended up with the M1 pro version.

I have a 2019 27inch imac that i have been hanging onto for a while, hoping for a 32inch imac. Doesn't have to be a Mac supercomputer, just an imac with a nice big screen for about £2200.
Has that concept died a death now? I don't want a MAc Mini box and an aftermarket monitor, but am bang in the market for a decent all in one jobby that I can use for my business and home use - I work from home.

What's the issue with the last idea? You can hide the mini and end up with a very minimalist looking setup. There are plenty of decent looking monitors out there and you'd be well under budget. Can’t imagine anything more minimalist to be honest and performance is superb, never felt their case get warm yet!

I'm still waiting for a Studio M2 Ultra. Can't be long now surely?
Not a snarky comment, but genuinely interested in what you will use that much power for?LunarOne said:
