I have recently created, for the first time, remote access to my home server (Mac M1 Mini) and NAS drives.... this was for Roon ARC, a music service, meaning my music library is now available remotely. Not too complicated - I needed a static IP address for the Mac Mini and to open (?) a port under port forwarding.

All good. It works.

It got me thinking that I would like to have access to my home network generally - I work in London (using my own MacBook Pro) and am away from home much of the time. It would be useful to have access to my NAS drive where most of my documents are.

It looks relatively straightforward - system preferences on the Mini, remote login, select user.

What do I use on my remote MacBook to see the NAS drive? It's not clear from Googling.

Any tips tricks?

Sorry for clunky questions, this is new to me.... also I won't be able to try any of this until the end of the week. smile

Most NAS are easy to setup so you can access them remotely.

I'd rather set up access through the server (MacMini) as it feels slightly less alien than the NAS software.

Look at ether creating a OpenVPN or wireguard vpn service on the home server and associated port forwarding on your router.

Or look at zerotier or truescale

Either way you need a vpn to allow you to connect external devices over the internet safely into your home lan.

I should add that whatever solution you use including the already implemented roon, these solutions open parts (ports) on your firewall and unless you keep on top of patching / new versions of associated sw or os then you are increasing your risks.

There are loads of cases of qnap users who exposed there nas for remote access having them infected and ransomware injected.
Not because opening ports is bad per se, but because there were security flaws in there implementation and these were not patched.

This is why I recommend if remote access is needed it’s done with a vpn provider who is focused on that as there primary driver, rather that a remote access solution that’s a bolt on extra rather than core.

Sounds more complex than letting the NAS do the leg work for you.
