I'm trying to love my Mac, I really am...

How do I for example 'cut' a file from my desktop and then paste it into a sub folder of another folder (i.e drag and drop doesn't work)?
On a PC it's just a simple case of right click, cut, paste into destination, job done.
It appears that on the mach I have to copy it, paste it, then go back and delete the original file which is an inefficient and unnecessary additional step.
I looked for 'move' but the only move option was move to bin.

I must be missing something obvious.

Any clues?

Command + X should do the trick.

I did dry that, but I just get a 'pip' sound as if its trying to tell me that is not a possible option.

Just open two finder windows, focus on the source and destination folders then drag and drop

Not for files though (copy works, just not cut)...yet another thing to remember when switching between MacOS and Windows.

However, you can 'copy' with Cmd-C then 'move' with Opt-Cmd-V (as per Robsa post)

I'll add it to the ever growing list I'm discovering.

Dragging it to a folder moves it. If it’s bipping at you then either you don’t have permissions to put it in the destination folder, or it can’t be removed from the current folder (eg because it is open in another program).

Dragging to a folder on the same file system moves it. Dragging to a different file system copies. Holding down option makes it a copy even on the same volume.

https://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&a... has some neat keyboard shortcut tricks.

Copy file using command-C, move file using option-command-V

Another common one is 'where is the delete button?' - the answer is hold down the little globe button in the bottom left of your keyboard and then hit backspace and it will perform a windows 'delete' action.
