Trying to contact car insurance people and was asked to select 2 for the correct option. I pressed 2 and nothing happened. This is my first smartphone, a Samsung Galaxy. On my previous £15 Nokia, I would simply press the 2 button, wait and get transferred.
What am I missing here.

I take it you pressed the icon on the screen to open the number pad first ?

Not up on Android, but have you got Dial Tones switched on?
Check in your settings, probably in sounds and display.

Yes, the keypad was visible, I pressed the 2 and a 2 appeared above the keypad, after a short while the voice said, "sorry I didn't get that", so I typed another 2 which mean't I had 22 above the keypad. That didn't work, so I finished call and tried again, but it didn't work. It is Churchill Insurance.

It's not unusual, assuming Churchill are using a SIP service, when you press "2" it sends a "reinvite" back to your service provider as it attempts to move to the next stage where it routes the call through to the Call centre, the service provider gets confused at the reinvite and doesn't respond properly or at all. Churchills system is waiting for the response which never arrives so eventually times out and you go nowhere.
