In my car the best place for my phone holder is on the right hand side of the steering wheel but this would mean draping the charging cable over my lap to reach the USB port. The OBD port is under the drivers dash so it would be quite easy to use this but I've read various warnings about not using the OBD port for phones & dashcams.

Has anyone done it & had issues - note it's not for a dashcam so the phone wouldn't be connected overnight although I'd prefer to not have to keep unplugging the OBD connector.

I'd really like a USB connector on the end but it's a real struggle to find one as they all seem to be mini or micro USB. The only one I can find is 3m long so if anyone knows of an alternative it would be useful.

Surely you can tap into a fuse - it would be much safer

I'd be very dubious drawing power from the OBD port for a non-OBD device (Anything other than a scanner)

A shorted charger would become very expensive and incredibly inconvenient.

I’d use one of those fuse taps that they use for dash cams over the obd port

I use one of these into a usb convertor/hub for my dash cam and phone charger. I fed the cable behind the stereo to get to the drivers side and they work great.
