New Apple Product Launch 2022 - iPhone 14
Discussion
I’ve been hanging onto my iPhone 12 mini hoping for a new folding phone this time. Doesn’t look that’s going to be the case:-

I don't think folding screen tech has reached the point where it's reliable enough for Apple to want to release it to their users.
The biggest issues (from what I can tell) will be durability and the ability the make the devices meet whatever IPXX rating it is that Apple would want (not that they advertise an IPXX rating for their devices).
My 12ProMax is still doing its thing so there's pretty much zero chance that I will upgrade to a 14 this year. In fact, if it gets through a couple more years of updates without grinding to a halt, I'll probably hang on to it. They're expensive devices and I buy outright (run with a rolling 30-day SIMO), so I like to sweat the asset!

I'm still on an XS, with a rapidly failing battery. I usually replace every 4 years, so the 14 is likely to be next. But I may just put a new battery in the XS and run it for another couple of years. The 14 Pro camera technology is looking tempting though, if it turns out to be true.
I'm on an XS with battery that won't last a day if I use it. It's cool, I can keep going, but defo thinking about an Iphone14 Pro this time.
Like the above though, I'm in no hurry to replace every year, if nothing else waiting longer seems to give a nice "boost" when you finally do move.

I don't think Apple will ever release a folding phone. Still feels a bit of a gimmick with a lot of downsides. It doesn't seem very 'Apple-like', if there is such a thing.
Hope they keep the Mini in the form of an SE model. There's definitely a small but persistent market for smaller phones.
Can't say I'm bothered about notch vs punchout. I had an S10 before my 12 Pro and it really doesn't add anything imo. You can't exactly read much behind it!
I expect I'll stick with the 12 for another year. If USB C comes in 2023 then that'll probably be a good time to upgrade.

Sadly it looks like you’re right. I’d really like a folding phone as like a larger screen than my 12 mini but I’d also like it to fit into my pocket easily. So do I change now while the 13’s can get a discount or wait for the 14.

The 14 might be one to skip if it still has a lightening connector as Apple may be compelled to shift to USB-C at some point.
Apple will replace batteries for a reasonable fee. I would be tempted to swap out the battery and hang on for an iPhone with a USB-C socket.
I just looked. Apple will replace the battery in my 12 mini for £69.Apple will replace batteries for a reasonable fee. I would be tempted to swap out the battery and hang on for an iPhone with a USB-C socket.

Prob a good shout if it enables you to eke out a few more years on your phone. My iPhone 8+ battery was £49 and worth it for me as I intend to keep it for as long as it is supported.
Let’s see what the 14 is like but for me if it has a lightening port that alone would be reason enough to hang on for a USB-C iphone.
I've got an X currently, just upgraded to a 13 pro at 50% off - too good to ignore at that price.
edit: I've had the X for 3 1/2 years and paid for a battery replacement last year. I have a second phone with a UK SIM (a 6s) which is on its way out, so this is a double upgrade for me an the X can live on as a second phone. The X is perfectly fine day to day, just the camera lets it down now.

Iphone 12 pro. Don’t need a better phone but annoyingly the charger port has stopped being reliable so probably going to get this one.
might be teaching to suck eggs but I find the sockets get fluff in them over time which cause problems with reliable connections. quick poke around with a propelling pencil gets the crap out.CoolHands said:
Yeah where?
Canada, so probably not too useful for most people on this thread. It is a contract phone, total cost is $790 over 24 months. I paid $480 up front so the monthly cost is around $13.
Haven’t had a contract phone for 10 years at least but seemed like a no brainer.
