For a general purpose domestic desktop, are the above, the current go to brands?

I'm looking to replace a decrepit Lenovo laptop after 8 years.

We have a HP laptop and my wife has a Dell desktop, both are around 3 years old and both are fine and have been reliable.

The only challenge with these types of systems is that they can be hard to repair or upgrade as some of the parts are Dell or HP only so hard to find after a while and sometimes don't play nice with upgrades.

If you want a more future proof system look at someone like PC Specialist https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk who will custom build for you which will be upgradeable / repairable with more generic parts.

I'd be taking a look on the Dell outlet site for something generic like that.

For desktops I would recommend Dell. I purchased refurbed Dells for my kids and they are great and reliable. Fairly easy to upgrade things like RAM, hard disk and GPU as they are modular.

It’s mainly for general school homework and light gaming, and due to the price I can refresh every 3 years or so if required.
