Now before we begin, I know all modern iPhones are waterproof so in theory I could jump straight in the pool and crack on but in practice it just feels wrong dropping a 3 figure piece of tech into a pool on purpose.

The question is can anyone suggest a decent but not extortionate, waterproof case for an iPhone where the main aim is taking pictures underwater? There are plenty of options on Amazon/Ebay ranging from the £50+ pro-snorkeler option (a bit much for photos in the pool and shallows) all the way down to the £5.99 plastic baggies which I've used before successfully(ish) but found an absolute pain to operate. Ideally I'd like to retain the ability use the exterior buttons on the phone at the very least to make snapping photos a bit more straight forward.

Are things like this going to be a bit pointless?

Any other first hand suggestions?

Unfortunately, I don't have a specific recommendation for an iPhone case, but thought I'd just say that I've recently found myself in exactly the same situation.

Updated my old iPhone 6 for a refurbed iPhone 12 Pro, and initially thought that as they are meant to be waterproof, this would mean total freedom taking photos in and around water. I've recently taken up whitewater kayaking again so seemed ideal.

Having since read several accounts of them not being quite so bulletproof (and waterproof), and the fact that despite them marketed as being waterproof, Apple's warranty still doesn't cover water damage, I also looked at waterproof cases.

I ended up (after a fair bit of research) getting a Ghostec Nautical case (I understand they also do them for the iPhone 13), and it seems ok - passed the waterproof test before putting it on the phone, however, I still can't say I'm completely confident of dunking almost £1k worth of phone in the water.

In the end, I looked instead at waterproof cameras and have picked up a somewhat abused (so cheap at £150) Olympus Tough TG6 camera off eBay. There are several waterproof cameras available at various prices - review here.

Might be worth considering a used example of one of the cheaper ones in the review as an alternative, and keeping the iPhone away from the water?
