However is it possible to have restrict editing on one of the docs?

I basically have to send over a legal doc in word format, the original signed versions are PDF.
The unsigned word doc will be used for comparison purposes only against next year's legal doc, when it is sent over.
We won't be using the track changes functions on it.
This is simply to help out a client so they can compare old with new at their own leisure.

Can I restrict editing of this year's doc on Word without it disabling the compare function?

TIA

If next year's version is the one the client wants to see which changes are made, then "this year's" locked document is just the original against which to compare next year's?

Correct, but once you lock one document the compare function is greyed out and you can't use the compare function on locked word docs.

I can't see a way around it unless you don't restrict editing.

I think I'll just watermark/caveat it and remove the signatory pages.

How about creating a PDF of the new version so they can compare old vs new in Acrobat?
