My current PC spec is as follows

Asus Maximus 7 Hero motherboard
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz 4.00 GHz
16Gb Ram

Primary use is coding in Visual Studio/Code, secondary is gaming (have a 3080 for that)

I've not been keeping up with the latest stuff for the last few years.

What would be the modern equivalent of the cpu/motherboard today?

A 12700K (8+4C/20T) or 12400 (6C/12T) and a Asus ROG Strix Z690 or one of the Maximus Z690 - but the Maximus is probably overkill if you're not going to be overclocking it or using 5 M.2s

Depending which motherboard you go for, remember that you may need swap to DDR5 RAM too.
