Help. My daughter has just phoned me to tell me she has spilt her Cappuccino over her Macbook Pro . She says she stopped using it immediately but the screen went blank. She has shut it down and put in the airing cupboard . Anything else she should be doing? Any tips greatly appreciated

Your insurer may be useful but there are also specialist repair companies that can help.

If she has sugar or it is a partiuarly milky drink then that will cause lots of issues and should be repaired properly.

These guys are good and I've seen their work before:

she could in the short term buy rice and bury the thing in that, open. It will remove some humidity.

BUT

if it went blank then there has been an immediate impact. Backups?

AppleCare exists on the device? I would recommend this for younger people and students as it will get the problem solved quickest.

Oh and coffee? More like red bull and vodka I hope biggrin

The basic Applecare warranty does not, but the Apple insurance product 'AppleCare Plus' does...https://www.apple.com/uk/support/products/mac/

No Apple care plus unfortunately. However some good tips here regarding repair. I hadn't even considered it may be repairable. Thanks

Before you do, once it’s dried out, get a quote directly from Apple for any repairs.

A couple of times (once with water damage, another a screen), it’s been cheaper for us to just get them repaired by Apple than claim, pay the excess, and have the increased premiums.
Repairs from apple will be ~price of new computer.

If you need to repaired for data recovery then you'll need to go 3rd party repair.

Thing is not to panic. Daughter spilt hot chocolate drink on her Macbook Pro. Switched it off, let it dry out. Didn't rush the drying process. Turned out fine. Thankfully she had picked up her Dad's habits regarding backups, so only lost about 20 minutes of work, loaded the backups onto another machine while the Macbook was drying out.

For a 2015 MacBook pPro we paid 280 for a screen and top case in the first incident, and 400 for a bottom case/battery/keyboard in the second incident which was a glass of coke all over it.

In case my maths is very crap, that looks a lot less than the 1700 the laptop cost.
And if the logic board it toast?

Ffs stop looking for an argument. All I said was they should get a quote from Apple before assuming their house insurance would be the cheapest way to get it repaired. There may be all sorts of things wrong, but until you get it looked at, you don’t know.

Once they get it looked at, then they can decide if excess+raised premiums is a better route than just paying for it.

It may just need cleaning.
Of course it might just need cleaning but apple won't clean to repair.

I am talking from experience. Not fishing for an argument.

wow that's a lot less than the £219 quid plus 2x£75 quid that apple charge.

What model/year is it? The problem will be the liquid adheres to the motherboard causing shorts. If it is an older one they aren't too hard to take apart and can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and you could get lucky. If it's a fairly recent MBP I would definitely at least get a quote from Apple as well as other places people have stated.

Whatever you do don't turn it on or plug it in.
