All,

I've seen excellent advice on here over the years when looking for new laptops....

I need a new laptop (sooner rather than later) as my Dell Precision is going back for a refund under warranty.

I am looking for a new machine that's a little more portable, but still OK at Lightroom for photography, amongst other things. I've looked at the new Apple M1 products, but even the M1 air with 16gb of memory is getting pretty pricey.

I have narrowed my choices down to:

Dell Vostro 15"

Dell Inspiron 16” Plus

These are coming in at similar cost, when using the Dell Outlet and adding additional warranty etc.

Another other recommendations?
Thanks
Chris

As long as you've got an SSD in your laptop and 8Gb RAM Lightroom will run just fine when properly configured for best performance.

I dealt with a couple of thousand photos on a very old IBM Thinkpad last year no problem at all. (It was a bit slow to generate proxies and output the finished images, but that is rarely a problem).

In other words, pretty much any machine you can buy should be fine IMHO.

Thanks ^^

I've just ordered a Dell G5 gaming laptop as I need one tomorrow (well actually today).

All sorted and hopefully this'll sort my issues.

Thanks

While 8GB is ok, more RAM is always useful for lightroom. I've a 2017 Dell XPS15 with 32GB of RAM and regularly use 25GB+ for lightroom when doing raw photos, especially merging multiple.

I hold my photos on a NAS so network is also a huge factor, so usually have cabled Ethernet to help that, although just stuck a WiFi 6 card in it a few days ok which has made the WiFi not too bad for Lightroom.
