I have an S9 mobile, which, up until recently, allowed apps, such as banking apps, to use Facial recognition/biometrics.

All of a sudden a few weeks back, the app no longer is able to connect the app with the camera and so I can no longer use this feature.

I have spoken with bank and they deny that it an issue with the app and suggested that it might lie with the phone.

The banking app has been given the necessary 'permissions.'

I checked on the phone settings and tried to set up the operating systems facial recognition but once again the phone indicates a problem and it cannot open the camera.

The camera is working perfectly normally, as far as I can tell.

Is anyone able to suggest where I may find an answer to this issue? There simply seems to be a blockage between the camera and apps/systems requiring access to the camera.

Thanks.

Check the app permissions for the app still exist. My S9 periodically removes permissions from certain apps as a 'security' thing. It does warn me that it's doing it, but easy to miss the warning.

Thanks, but I have checked and the App has the necessary permissions, as far as I can see.

Are you still able to use the facial ID for the standard phone security? (Unlock/phone password etc.)

if so I suspect some of the apps have removed support for that version of the OS as its no longer supported. Although Android 10 should still be.

Try reinstalling the banking app. That type of biometric ID isn't very secure at all, see if when reinstalled it gives the option to use the fingerprint sensor, that's far more secure.

Thanks for those replies and comments.

I am unable to use the Samsung facial recognition either . Both tasks seem unable to open the camera to take the image, although the camera itself seems to function correctly.

I realise that the S9 is quite dated but it previously operated without issue and I am baffled as to why it should now stop working.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the banking app; I have deleted the camera data; I have deleted the facial recognition data.

Running out of ideas now!

This might be a pointer/clue ?

Obviously I've no idea if you are with Barclays but have you tried deleting your face (as it were) and setting it up again ?

ETA: Looks like you tried that, and if that does not work, it points to the phone and not the banking app. But I've no idea what it could be however.

I've not been very helpful now I think about it !

S9 is no longer updated by Samsung. Maybe it now doesn't have latest security patches so has lost the functionality within that app?

That's what I suspect.

I'm still using an S9 and the face ID is working for me. Phone security's not having any problems and I've just set it up for HSBC's app with no issues.
